Why Massage is a Necessity, Not a Luxury

Massage is loaded with health benefits and is just what the doctor ordered.

It’s time to stop thinking of massage as a luxurious indulgence, but rather a research-backed tool that can improve your health.

“The notion that massage is ‘just an indulgence’ is antiquated,” says Brent A. Bauer, M.D., director of the complementary and integrative medicine program at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. “There are over 1,000 studies and published reports that offer scientific evidence on the health effects of massage therapy. There are certainly direct effects like changes that happen at the muscle level and pain pathways and a reduction in stress hormones, such as cortisol. But there are also indirect effects like being in a comfortable setting and a compassionate human presence that can all lead to profound effects on our stress levels and emotional state.”

Don’t just take Dr. Bauer's word for it. Here, research reveals five health benefits to a good rub down.

1. Massage decreases stress, depression and anxiety. When you’re anxious and feeling the pressure, your body pumps out the stress hormone cortisol. Unfortunately, this just makes you feel even more stressed and anxious. Here’s where a massage can help. Researchers at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, studied patients who had undergone open-heart surgery. They compared the benefits of massage and quiet relaxation time and found that those in the massage group were significantly less anxious and tense. They also reported significantly less pain. Other studies confirm these results. “Similar efforts in thoracic, breast and colorectal surgery led to widespread implementation of massage therapy in our hospitals,” explains study author Bauer.

2. A rub down reduces lower back pain.Oh, your aching back!  If lower back pain is making life, well, really painful, a little rub down may be just what the doctor ordered. Researchers at the University of Miami School of Medicine conducted a five-week study on people who had been suffering from lower back pain for at least six months. They found that those who got 30 minutes of massage therapy twice a week had less pain and more mobility and range of motion in their lower backs than those who had relaxation therapy during that time. Added bonus? The massage group also felt less stressed!

3. You’ll sleep better. Many of us have trouble falling asleep at night and nearly 10 percent of Americans suffer from chronic insomnia. In the same lower back pain study conducted at the University of Miami School of Medicine, study participants in the massage group also said they slept better than those in the relaxation group. Another study in the Journal of Clinical Rheumatology compared the benefits of massage to those of relaxation therapy on people who have fibromyalgia. After five weeks of twice- weekly 30-minute massages, those in the massage therapy group slept longer and more soundly than those who had relaxation therapy. Plus, people in the rub-down group also found their pain level decreased and they had fewer tender spots on their bodies.

4. Massage may ease knee pain.Osteoarthritis of the knee means there’s been a breakdown of cartilage, ligaments, joint lining or underlying bone, which can be a real pain in the knees. But massage may help. A study at both Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center in Connecticut and University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey found that weekly Swedish massages decreased knee pain in those suffering from osteoarthritis. In the eight-week study, some participants had 60-minute Swedish massages once or twice a week, while the others had shorter or less frequent treatments or no massage at all. Those in the 60-minute massage group had less pain and more function in their knees.

5. The therapy alleviates carpal tunnel syndrome. With more of us logging longer hours in front of our computers, wrist pain is a problem many can relate to. In more serious situations, you may have carpal tunnel syndrome, which is when the median nerve that runs through the wrist becomes trapped, causing pain and tingling. A gentle massage may help. One study reported in Rheumatology International divided carpal tunnel sufferers into two groups. One group got hand massages in addition to wearing wrist splints, while the other group just wore the wrist splints. At the end of the study, those in the massage group had better grip strength and less pain. A second study in the Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies had carpal tunnel patients do self-massage daily and get a professional massage weekly for four weeks compared to a control group.  The massage group had less pain and anxiety and better grip strength than the control group.

8 Natural Headache Remedies

How to Stop Headaches Without Taking Medicine

Though resolving a headache can be as easy as popping a pain reliever, it’s important to know that there are effective natural remedies. If you want to avoid growing dependent on pills, ChickRx has assembled 8 natural ways to treat and prevent the uncomfortable, annoying, and sometimes-painful pounding in your head.

If you’re suffering from migraines, which internist Dr. Andrea Ruman describes as “severe, recurring, intense, throbbing pain on one side of the head that can be very debilitating” and last 4 to 72 hours, it’s best to consult with your primary care physician. However, common headaches are a great candidate for natural remedies.

These headaches range from a dull, aching sensation to a sharp, throbbing pain, located on either side or radiating to both sides of the head. They’re often caused by stress, sleep deprivation (or oversleeping), caffeine withdrawal, alcohol, poor posture, dehydration, skipping meals, and dietary influences. More so than headaches caused by preexisting health conditions or migraines, common headaches are more easily managed through natural remedies, such as these.

Dietary Changes
“Some food additives, nitrates and food colorings are common headache triggers,” explains registered nutritionist and health coach Princess Carey. “Additives often increase blood flow to the brain causing headaches.”

She recommends avoiding substitute or artificial sweeteners, canned, processed or smoked foods--especially processed meats, sodium packed foods and foods that contain monosodium glutamate (MSG). Also steer clear of foods such as chocolate and cheese, which contain headache trigger phenylethylamine, and tyramine found in some nuts, meats and cheeses. Instead, opt for magnesium-rich choices like spinach and sweet potatoes, and foods contained essential fatty acids such as olives, beans, fish and flaxseed oil, and look into adding supplements containing vitamin B2 and CoQ10 to your vitamin routine and making sure you get your daily intake of vitamin D (2000 mg/day).

Hydration
Dehydration is one of the most common headache causes that often gets overlooked. If you’re not thirsty, it doesn’t mean dehydration isn’t causing your pounding head--oftentimes thirst isn’t even a primary symptom of being low on your H2O needs. If you think that dehydration may be causing your headache, alternate glasses of water with an electrolyte-rich sports drink such as Gatorade until you feel an improvement; then make sure you’re getting around 64 to 72 oz. of water a day to ward off any future water-related aches.

Ginger Tea
Ginger is a natural anti-inflammatory, meaning sipping on a cup of ginger tea will reduce the inflammation that is leading to your headache. Even better? It’s fast acting. Add crushed fresh ginger root to boiling water for a few minutes and then sip like you would regular tea. Ginger tea is also a great remedy for hangovers.

Feverfew
Possessing similar benefits as ginger, feverfew is an herb made from drying the leaves of a small flowering feverfew plant. The herb is used commonly in supplements for its anti-inflammatory benefits. The best way to take feverfew if you feel a headache coming in is in an over-the-counter supplement that also contains ginger. The good thing is that there are very few side effects to feverfew; however, if you are pregnant you should not take this supplement as it may cause uterine contractions.

Hot & Cold Compresses
If you’re in a pinch, apply a warm compress to the back of your neck toward the base of your head to help with headaches brought on by poor posture. Go for a cold compress at the temples, however, if you are experiencing a throbbing headache. The cold will help to lower inflammation by reducing the temperature of the blood that is being pumped through the lining of the brain, meaning a bit of the throbbing will be reduced.

Take a Breather
If you are in a position where you can, take a break from whatever you are doing and try to rest for 20 minutes. You don’t have to nap, just quieting your mind and relaxing the muscles in your body can be a huge step toward reducing headache tension and pain. Taking the moment to simply relax will help to interrupt the pain cycle and likely relieve or at least lessen the headache.

Unfortunately, most of the time headaches attack in environments that aren’t exactly conducive to adult naptime. Instead, try to take a few moments to perform breathing exercises like those found here to help get you centered  and hopefully alleviate some of the tension in your head and body.

Reduce Caffeine Intake
If your go-to headache relief is to pop ibuprofen, aspirin or naproxen, be sure not to double up on the caffeine afterward. Most pain relief medications already have caffeine in them as a way to speed up their metabolism and get them working faster in your blood. So why not drink more caffeine after taking a pain-killer to speed it up? It seems logical, but unfortunately that’s not how the body responds to caffeine. If you take in too much your body is going to respond with an even more intense headache than you were initially trying to treat.

Even if you’re not taking pain medication, be mindful of how much caffeine you’re drinking daily as simply drinking too much can bring on pounding headaches and light sensitivity.

Find Your Headache Triggers
The best way to treat your headache effectively is to figure out what is actually causing it.  Clinical pharmacist Stacey McCoy recommends keeping what she calls “A Headache Diary,” and jotting down the answers to the following questions:

1. Usual time of onset
2. What you were doing when it started?
3. How long the headache lasted?
4. Time of onset until the headache peaked
5. How often you're having headaches?
6. Where the headache is located?
7. Is there nausea or vomiting associated with the headache?
8. Are there any food triggers?
9. How many hours of sleep are you getting?
10. Which medications you're using to treat your headache and the amount of medication you're using

Answering these questions will help you establish a pattern of behavior in relation to the headache. Are you getting the same dull headache an hour after indulging in your favorite Thai food or after a late night out? Chances are those lifestyle choices are bringing on the headaches, and at least this way you’ll be able to track down the culprit, whatever it may be.

Why Do You Have to Drink Water After a Massage?

Great article worth a share.  The Question - Why do you have to drink water after a massage?

Ask a Scientist: Why Do You Have to Drink Water After a Massage?
The Scientist: Michele Naumann Carlstrom, licensed massage therapist at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York

The Answer: If you’ve ever gotten a massage, whether at a spa, a sports medicine facility, or a kiosk at the airport, chances are that your masseuse instructed you to drink a lot of water when you got home (or wherever your travels may have taken you). The reasons for this are twofold.

First off, massages are dehydrating. Kneading and working muscle gets fluid pumping out of the soft tissue and into your circulatory system, where it heads toward your kidneys. That’s why many people have to pee right after a massage. You have to replenish all that lost water—by drinking more.

Then there’s the issue of metabolic waste, which is produced by muscles in the course of everyday function. When your muscles are tight or you’ve got a major knot, it constricts circulation in those areas, inhibiting the body’s ability to flush out this waste. And, since tight muscles are probably what prompted you to make a massage appointment in the first place, chances are you’ve got some compromised circulation happening. Massage relaxes the tension, releasing the circulatory pathways and allowing nitrogenous metabolic waste to dump into the system. Drinking provides your kidneys with the water they need to effectively eliminate the newly liberated waste.

Healthy Living: 8 Ways to Stop Sugar Cravings

The Secret to Controlling Cravings

Sugar cravings can get to even the most disciplined healthy eaters among us. One innocent little bite of a birthday cupcake and suddenly you’re face down in an empty bag of Oreos. Hey, it happens.

While sugar cravings may seem uncontrollable, there actually is a science to them and clear-cut ways you can get them in check. So, to prevent ruining all that good work you’ve done at the gym or opting for that salad, follow these eight expert tips to squash those beastly sugar cravings.

De-Stress
You can thank stress for a huge chunk of those sugar cravings. These cravings begin in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis of your brain, which fires up when you’re stressed or coping with a busy lifestyle. “This HPA axis on overdrive makes your body actually crave more sugar because it thinks it’s constantly in ‘acute danger’ and needs more sugar to help you react quicker and survive,” explains Dr. Dani Gordon, an integrative medicine specialist and family physician.

So to get to the root cause of many sugar cravings, you’ve got to de-stress. Dr. Dani recommends taking up yoga, get a massage, mediate or do breathing exercises to calm the HPA axis before it sends you into a sugar fit. (Indeed, whether your stressed or not, trying some calming breathing exercises can help you control a sugar craving.)

Get Your Eight Hours
When you’re not getting enough quality sleep, the hormone serotonin—the one that affects mood and appetite—dips below what the body needs to keep you happy and motivated. “The body knows that simple sugars will increase serotonin levels and hence the food cravings,” explains triathlon, fitness and nutrition coach Dr. Rick Kattouf.

Try a Sugar Detox

While “everything in moderation” is the crux of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, sometimes even moderate amounts of sugar can send a girl careening down a slippery slope of sugar, sugar and more sugar.

So to better control your desire for sugary foods, it can be helpful to simply avoid all processed, sugary foods and eat clean for a couple of weeks (clean out your kitchen so that you don’t get tempted!). Or, if you want to be more hardcore about it, you could try a detox or juice cleanse.

As your body becomes used to not eating these sugary, processed foods, it will gradually stop craving them. Think of it as sugar rehab.

Treat Yourself to Fruit

Once you start avoiding processed food and sugary snacks, you’ll be surprised at how easily a sugar craving can be tackled with a few sweet strawberries, a banana or a cup of watermelon. Remember, fruits have natural sugars, but we sometimes aren’t attuned to their sweetness because our taste buds are so intoxicated by ridiculously sugary, processed foods.

So if you’re having a sugar craving after a meal, try satisfying it with a sweet piece of fruit. Fruit is jam-packed with vital nutrients, unlike Oreos.   Don’t overdo it with the fruit, though. Because it’s high in sugar (fructose), certified holistic and clinical nutritionist Pamela Warren and registered dietitian Anita Mirchandani both recommend eating no more than 3 servings of fruit a day.

Meal Timing

Sleep isn’t the only thing that affects those serotonin levels. Properly timing when your body gets nutrients is key to curbing serotonin-responsible sugar cravings as well.   Dr. Kattouf recommends fueling the body as soon as you wake—just have something small if you don’t have much of an appetite first thing in the morning. After breakfast, Dr. Kattouf recommends eating every 2.5 to 3.5 hours to keep your blood sugars (and serotonin levels) stabilized. Another good rule of thumb is to shoot for three meals a day plus two snacks, or five small meals a day.

Balance Macronutrients
It’s not just how often you eat, but also what you eat that can help combat cravings.

To properly balance your blood sugar and seratonin levels, it’s important to eat a combination of carbs, protein and fat with each meal. (The worst thing you can do is to start your day with a sugary or starchy meal for breakfast.)   Although amounts vary depending on your fitness goals, weight, and health needs, Dr. Kattouf says a simple rule of thumb for caloric breakdown is 40 to 55 percent carbohydrates, 15 to 30 percent protein and 15 to 30 percent fat. Keeping a food diary can help you to track your levels throughout the day, as can planning your meals ahead of time.   Be sure to opt for healthy sources of carbohydrates (like whole grains), fats (like olive oil and avocados) and protein (like lean meats, Greek yogurt).

And of course, drink plenty of water with and between meals. Sometimes being thirsty can trigger what we perceive to be a food craving.

Exercise

Your body can crave sugar to combat an energy slump, so stay energized. Getting enough sleep, combating stress, eating frequently and balancing nutrients are all important components of that, but so too is exercise.

Recognize Boredom & Emotional Issues
Many of us start thinking about, and craving, sweets when we get bored or are feeling down. Make a concerted effort to recognize if you fall into either or both of these patterns.

If you’re eating as a response to boredom, make a concerted effort to find other ways to stimulate yourself. Cravings generally last for 10 to 20 minutes max, so go engage yourself with something else and let the craving pass.

Some ideas for you: get a manicure, go for a walk or run, call a friend/family member, organize your drawers, etc. If you get antsy while watching TV, grab a couple of hand weights and do a few bicep curls while you watch.

Just like boredom can trigger a sugar flare up, so too can emotional problems. While that cupcake may help you feel warmer and fuzzier, the pick up from it is only temporary. If you’re going through a tough time, acknowledge that food is not a solution, and consciously make an effort to find support through friends, family, or therapy if you need.

Massage for Mental Health

New research recently published in clinical journals help substantiate the mental health benefits of massage therapy.
istockphoto.com

New research recently published in clinical journals help substantiate the mental health benefits of massage therapy, according to a official statement from the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA).

Research published in the April 2013 issue of The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine found that massage therapy could help reduce symptoms of depression for those with HIV disease. The eight-week study reportedly found massage significantly reduced the severity of depression starting at week four and continuing through weeks six and eight. The ATMA believes the study shows that regular therapeutic massage could be a benefit for those with HIV that are suffering from depression.

Cancer patients who received a back massage during chemotherapy experienced lessened anxiety and fatigue, according to a study published in the September 2013 issue of Applied Nursing Research. The ATMA says this study is an example of how massage therapy could benefit patients as a regular part of a cancer treatment plan.

In addition to the above studies, the AMTA conducted its annual consumer survey in August and found that massage therapy is increasingly finding a place in Americans’ health and wellness regimens. Finding indicated that 88% of respondents believe massage is beneficial to overall health and wellness. That same percentage believe massage can be effective in reducing pain, and 75% of those surveyed said their primary reason for getting a massage was either medical (43%) or stress-related (32%). More than half of respondents stated that it was their doctor who gave them the recommendation to get a massage.

6 Ways for Men to Benefit from the Spa

The word “spa” has a unique way of frightening many otherwise brave men. The same guys who ride motorcycles, climb mountains, and jump out of airplanes are often deathly afraid of walking into the lobby of a spa. We can’t really blame them. In the beginning, many spas were very feminine and the treatments were mostly geared toward women. But, times are changing! Most spas now welcome men with open arms, offering unisex environments and plenty of treatments to choose from. Here’s a look at just a few of the ways that men across the country are now taking advantage of their neighborhood spa.

Massage Therapy
Massage has always been the favorite spa treatment for men. It gives them a chance to unwind, de-stress, and relax. Monterey Day Spa offers a wide range of massages, such as hot stone and deep tissue, which allows men to customize their massage according to their needs.

Manicures
Male nail grooming has become more important, as men regularly meet with clients, co-workers, and sales contacts. No one wants to close a deal with a guy who has dirt under his nails, unless he’s building you a house.

Waxing
The days of the uni-brow are over, which is evidenced by the fact that many electric trimmers now come standard with brow trimmers. An increasing number of men are visiting spas to remove the uni-brow, and then finding that a bit of brow grooming helps to polish the look. Why stop at brows? Many are signing up for a back wax, chest wax, or opting for laser hair removal.

Skincare
Most women will agree that men grow more handsome as they get older. However, many men would not agree, and they are always looking for ways to retain their youthful appearance. This is where the spa can help by offering skin treatments that improve hydration, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, restore collagen, reduce the size of pores, and more!

Sauna
Few men visit the spa without going into the sauna. Before or after a treatment, the benefit of sweating out some toxins for a few minutes while breathing in the dry heat is a great addition to any trip to the spa.

Homecare
Shopping for personal care items can be confusing for a lot of men. A spa professional who is well trained will help both men and women to choose the correct products for their skin type. Men are usually overjoyed to learn that they can get all of their personal care items from one place, and with the help of an expert.

If the men in your life don’t go to spas, maybe now is the time to invite them to join you for your next visit. Start with a massage for two; that way, he will feel more comfortable, and enjoy the experience!

How to Get Soft, Beautiful Skin in Three Days

DIY Expert Tips to Quickly Get Clearer, Glowing Skin

It's all too easy to get lazy with your skin care routine when you’re dealing with a busy schedule. But skipping those bedtime face washes and moisturizer applications can really leave your complexion looking lackluster, dull and just plain blah. To get back your usual glowing, beautiful complexion, follow this simple skin care regime for three nights., courtesy of expert, Licensed Esthetician and Acne Specialist Daniela Ferri:

Exfoliating Scrub + Clay Mask
The best way to reveal new, glowing skin is to remove the old, dull layer of skin cells blocking it. Once you’ve washed your face as normal, apply an exfoliating scrub. Just make sure that your scrub does not contain crushed fruit pits or nutshells. Apply and rinse off with warm water after 10 minutes. Follow up with a clay mask for 10 minutes. (If you have dry skin, apply a layer of moisturizer before applying the mask.) Rinse off clay with cool water. Gently pat skin dry with a clean, dry towel.

Tone + Moisturize
Apply your normal toner followed by moisturizing lotion. Massage into skin gently. Don’t forget your neck--an area often overlooked in daily beauty regimes--and make sure you’re using the right moisturizer. “Make sure your nighttime hydrating lotion is not with an SPF,” recommends Ferri. “These daytime lotions are not made to be specifically hydrating or softening.”

Blemish Treatment
Freeze out any new breakouts. Apply ice to blemish area for 2 to 3 minutes. Gently pat dry area with a clean towel and gently apply an acne treatment such as Benzoyl Peroxide or Salicylic Acid. Finish off with a smudge of clay mask on top of the blemish. Leave the clay mask on the blemish area over night while you indulge in your much-needed beauty sleep (this will help dry out the pimple). Wash off the spot of clay mask in the morning with cool water.

But remember, even the most impeccable night-time regimen can't always compensate for bad habits. So you also need to keep these skin-saving behaviors in mind throughout your day:

No-Makeup Workout
When hitting the gym, be sure to wash off your makeup before getting your sweat-on. Removing makeup before working out will prevent makeup and dirt on the surface of your skin from seeping in and clogging your pores.

Nutrition
The old adage, “You are what you eat,” is perhaps no truer than when it comes to your skin. Pair a little clean eating with the regime for added skin--and body--benefits. Registered Dietitian and Nutrition Expert Carlene Thomas recommends drinking lots of water and increasing the amount of fruits and veggies you’re eating over the three-day period. “Strawberries and peppers are great for skin with Vitamin C,” she says. “Spinach can help increase blood flow for a good glow to the face.”

Luckily, it doesn't take too much time or diligence to invest in a good skin routine and the right habits. So go ahead and let your skin be as fabulously radiant as you are.

If you aren't sure what products are right for you, be sure to ask one of our Licensed Estheticians who will be more than happy to assist you!

What is a Hot Stone Massage?

Don't Get Burned With This Warming Treatment

stone massageHot stone massage uses heated basalt stones to soothe and relax.
Specialty massage where the therapist uses smooth, heated stones, either as an extension of their own hands, or by placing them on the body while they massage other parts of the body. The heat can be both deeply relaxing and help warm up tight muscles so the therapist can work more deeply, more quickly.

Hot stones warmed by fire were used by Native Americans to treat aching muscles, but the modern revival of hot stones in massage is generally credited to Mary Nelson, a native of Tucson, Arizona. She trademarked her style of hot stone massage, called LaStone Therapy, which has a Native American spiritual component and requires training and certification.

Most spas offer their own versions of hot stone massage (they might call it lava stone massage, river rock massage, warm stone massage and so on.) A hot stone massage, however, takes a lot of skill and sensitivity on the part of the therapist.

What Happens During a Hot Stone Massage?

Before you arrive, the massage therapist sanitizes the stones and heats them in bath of 120 to 150 degree water. The stones themselves are usually basalt, a black volcanic rock that absorbs and retains heat well, and have been smoothed by natural forces in the river or sea.

You usually start face down, with the therapist working on your back. First, the therapist warms up the body with traditional Swedish massage, then massages you while holding a heated stone. As the stone cools, the therapist replaces it with another. The therapist uses many stones of various shapes and sizes -- big ones on the big muscles, smaller ones on smaller muscles.

The therapist might also leave heated stones in specific points along your spine, in the palms of your hand, on your belly, or even between your toes to improve the flow of energy in your body. Many therapists believe that the stones themselves have an energetic charge and that needs to be maintained by placing them in a spiral pattern, placing them in a full moon periodically.

Be sure to speak up if the stones are too warm or the pressure too intense. And you can always ask them to stop using the stones if you don't like how it feels.

Who Shouldn't Get Hot Stone Massage?

Hot Stone massage is not appropriate if you have diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, or are on medication that thins your blood. You shouldn't get a hot stone massage if you are pregnant or have a sunburn. You also may want to reconsider if you are menopausal, as it may trigger a hot flash.

Swedish Massage vs. Deep Tissue Massage

Swedish or Deep Tissue Massage: Which is Right for You?

Massage has become an increasingly popular way for people to relieve tension and enjoy a relaxing retreat from life's otherwise stressful activities. Massage can be an enjoyable experience for those who benefit from it, and it is also a great way to improve energy and motivation at work and at home.
But what type of massage should you get? If you go to a typical, legitimate massage spa or clinic, you will find scores of options on their list of services, some of which are obvious and others that are equally obscure. The two most popular types of massage (excluding sports injury related massage) are Swedish massage and Deep Tissue massage. So which will be of the most benefit to you?

First of all, massage should be a relaxing, enjoyable experience. If you try a particular type that causes pain or makes you uncomfortable, switch to something else until you find what works for you. Different people experience different reactions to massage, so it shouldn't worry you if a treatment your friend recommended just isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Swedish massage was developed in 1812 by a Swedish physiologist named Henri Peter Ling, who worked at the University of Stockholm. He wanted to create a relaxing form of massage that would increase circulation, ease tension and improve flexibility in patients.

Swedish massage incorporates five individual techniques, which are used together to create the maximum effect and benefit: long, smooth strokes; careful kneading of individual muscles; friction; hacking (tapping); and consistent vibration.

A common technique called "draping" is used in Swedish massage, which means that most of the body is covered by a sheet during the massage, and the sheet is moved as the massage therapist moves to a new section of the body. Swedish massage is meant to be a quiet, relaxing experience, and therapists often play soft music in the background while administering the massage.
Reasons to request a Swedish Massage:

1. You have poor circulation, and you wish to improve it. The long, gentle strokes help to open circulation and increase blood flow to the extremities.

2. You are stressed about work or home life. Swedish massage is intended for relaxation and comfort, and will help to relieve stressors that affect you on a daily basis.

3. You have sensitive skin. Swedish massage is very gently, and will not abrade the skin or the muscles. It is not intended to "work out" kinks and knots, but to soothe them.

Deep Tissue massage is designed to relieve severe tension in the muscles of the neck and back and in the connective tissue, called fascia. It is called "deep tissue" massage because it is aimed at the muscles located below the surface of the top muscles, and will invariably work out hard knots or adhesions that exist in those muscles.

Many of the same techniques used in Swedish massage are also implemented in Deep Tissue massage, but the pressure is usually more intense and focused. Rather than massaging the entire neck and back, Deep Tissue massage will usually be focused on problem areas and stiff muscles.

Deep Tissue massage is great for people who sit or stand in one position all day or who engage in physical activity on a regular basis. Muscles tend to compensate for one another, which can create an imbalance in the muscular structure of the body. Deep Tissue massage serves to ease the tension in over-compensating muscles and to alleviate stress on particular muscle groups.

Many people mistakenly believe that Deep Tissue massage should hurt, and that if the therapist applies more pressure, pain will be instantly relieved. In reality, Deep Tissue massage should not hurt, though it might be uncomfortable in comparison to Swedish massage. Massage therapists will always encourage you to say something if the pressure becomes to much to handle.
Reasons to request Deep Tissue Massage:

1. You experience chronic pain in a particular muscle group. This usually means that the muscles are over-compensating, and Deep Tissue massage can serve to overcome that.

2. You are consistently involved in heavy physical activity. Deep Tissue massage is designed to relieve tension and aches in muscles that might be overworked or strained.

3. You have sustained prior injuries that are still bothering you. Deep Tissue massage will help to promote the mending of those muscles and to work out any kinks or knots that have formed as a result of that injury.

Summer Hair

Summer's Hottest Haircut: Is It Right for You?

Even though we don't do hair here at Monterey Day Spa, we know how it is an important part of your beauty routine!  We found this article, and thought you might be interested about Summer's Hottest Hair!  Take a look.

From the runway to the red carpet, it seems like some of the most stylish girls around are chopping off their hair for summer. Top model Karlie Kloss debuted a short bob backstage at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in November, and just weeks after her win for Best Actress at the Oscars, America’s sweetheart Jennifer Lawrence decided to do away with her long locks in favor of a layered shag. Sure, shorter strands might seem like the easiest way to lighten up your look for the season, but beware: this look isn’t for everyone. We chatted with Bumble and bumble stylist Roz Murray who gave us some key things to consider before you make the cut.

It won’t necessarily keep you cool. Roz gets tons of requests for this crop at Bumble, varying in length from the chin to the collarbone. People tend to think that this cut is a lighter and cooler option for summer, but they often lose sight of the fact that you can’t simply put it up. “A lot of girls are used to pulling their hair into a topknot when they get too warm, but with a bob you don’t have that luxury,” Roz explained.

Be sure to pick the right length for your face shape and hair texture. "You need to have a realistic expectation of your style, depending on what kind of hair and texture you have," Roz said. "If you have curly hair, remember curls jump when you cut them, so your style will look shorter once you leave the salon. You should talk to your stylist about appropriate weight removal — not necessarily layers — when going shorter. With a one-length bob, it's a matter of getting in there and removing the appropriate amount of weight with a razor or texturing tool so it doesn’t go into a triangle shape." The key to keeping this style youthful and current is making sure it's shattered and broken up at the ends, which gives you a piecey, bedhead-like look.

Your personality plays a big role. Short hair means different things — and different feelings — to different people. “Some women feel less girly when they cut their hair because they imagine long "mermaid hair" as the feminine ideal," Roz said. "But others feel really sexy and empowered!”

It’s not as easy to maintain as it looks. Because you can't just pull your hair back into a ponytail, when you commit to a crop, you commit to actually doing your hair everyday. Plus, it requires more frequent cuts it to keep it at at the desired length.

Less is more. When it comes to styling a short cut, it's best to play up your natural texture. "I think the Beachwaver or a wide curling iron is great for styling this look," Roz told us. "It gives you that slightly undone, wavy look that's so sought after."

Get Regular Facials

Get regular facials.  Facials are wonderful to get your pores cleaned out and give your skin a fresh start.  Facials help prevent skin problems like acne, dryness and wrinkles.  Some people use a dozen  skin care products and wonder why their skin does not look prefect. Using excessive products on your skin can be damaging and makes it tough for your skin to absorb any of them. Try to keep simple when it comes to skin care products. Your esthetician can recommend a great cleanser, moisturizer, sunscreen and toner which would be enough to keep it healthy. T

Say “No” To Unhealthy Food

The best way to get a healthy skin is to eat and drink right food. Having breakfast should be on the top of your to-do list in the morning. Consume lots of green leafy vegetables and fruits like spinach, cabbage, broccoli, apple, papaya, oranges etc. in your meals.  Nothing can be better than eating raw salads and sprouts. Unhealthy and oily food marks its effects on the skin and you get excess of oil and acne problems. Keep a proper diet that is easy to digest which will leave its effects on your skin making it healthy and glowing.
