Facial Massage

Facial Massage -- the ULTIMATE Anti-Aging Treatment

© Yanik Chauvin | Dreamstime.comHead and neck de-stress massage brings relief to those who suffer stiffness around the neck and tight shoulders, migraines, stress, eyestrain and insomnia, greatly improving circulation! Aromatherapy combined with lymphatic and pressure point massage of the upper chest, neck and face brings relief of colds, congestion, blocked ears and sinusitis. Vital energy will flow freely as blood circulation is increased.

The face is full of small, sensitive muscles. Tension and age causes the connective tissue between the layers of the facial skin and the facial muscles to become less supple over time. Habitual expressions such as frown lines, rigid jaws and squinting eyes can become set.

The gentle and relaxing pressure of a proper facial massage can loosen up the facial muscles, soothe congested eyelids, smooth the eye contour and leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed! Circles under the eye and facial wrinkles are reduced, and your complexion will be toned and glowing due to the selection of proper active ingredients!

The face needs exercise. The stimulating effect of nimble fingers massaging the face helps stimulate, nourish, and firm the skin!

How to Make Your Hair Grow Faster

Tired of wishing and hoping for your hair to just grow already? Here's how to help move it along a bit.

How to Make Your Hair Grow Faster

If you’ve ever stood in front of the mirror, tugged at your hair and willed it, dared it, to grow, then you understand the particular frustration that comes with hair that just won’t get any longer.

Whether you’re regretting that bold pixie cut or just wish you could change up your look without splurging on extensions, making your hair grow faster is tricky. But it’s not a lost cause: Improving hair’s health and feeding your body the right nutrients for healthy hair will put you on the path to longer, stronger strands.

Everyone has a specific hair cycle for every hair on her body, notes Dr. Francesca Fusco, CLEAR Scalp and Hair Dermatologist, so some women will have hair that grows quickly, while others may have a much longer cycle. One product, Latisse, works by extending the growth cycle of eyelashes. But unfortunately, there’s nothing out there that does the same on your scalp.

“There is no documented pill that I know of which will dramatically speed hair growth; however, with supportive scalp and hair care, your hair will grow strong, resilient and healthy,” says Dr. Fusco. Contrary to popular belief, getting frequent trims will not influence how quickly your hair grows either (sorry!).

Although there’s no magic pill you can pop or serum you can apply that’ll transform you into Rapunzel, there are other ways to influence your rate of hair growth. It's possible you have an underlying issue: you’re not getting the right nutrients, your hair is weak and therefore breaking at a certain point, or maybe your stress levels are so high it’s interrupting your hair growth.

By honing in on these factors, you can boost hair health and give your locks a little extra encouragement.

Healthy Scalp, Healthy Hair“The scalp is the skin that hair follicles sit in,” says Fusco, and it’s where each follicle receives its blood supply, allowing it to grow strong. If you show your scalp a little TLC and make sure it's nourished and healthy, then your hair will in turn be healthy, stronger and more resistant to breakage, allowing it to reach new lengths.

Bolster Against BreakageAssess your hair’s health. If it’s dry or damaged, that means it’s probably breaking before it can reach a certain length, giving the illusion that it grows slowly. “Daily hot tools, chemicals, constant traction from extensions—could all put excessive stress on hair causing it to break,” says Dr. Fusco. Check for split ends or even tiny nodes midshaft, which can also indicate weak points in danger of breakage.
To give your strands a better shot at growing long and strong, cut back on the reckless styling that can lead to breakage. Heat style less often, brush gently and use a moisturizing and reparative hair mask to hydrate hair and nourish the scalp—where hair gets most of its strength.

Load Up on NutrientsIf you’re low in specific nutrients that are essential for hair health, supplementing can help. Look for a multivitamin that’s formulated specifically for hair, nails and skin (it’ll say on the label) to make sure it has these important nutrients for hair health: B vitamins, biotin, cysteine, vitamin C.
“Protein is hair’s best friend,” says Dr. Fusco, as are omega-3 fatty acids. Reach for healthy protein such as eggs and fish and avoid fasting or yoyo dieting. These can deprive your body of these essential building blocks for a healthy scalp and hair.

Stop StressingWe already know too much stress is bad for health and beauty, but did you know there’s a known connection between stress and hair loss, too? “When it is constant it can cause spiking of cortisol levels and this can contribute to increased hair shedding,” says Dr. Fusco. To relieve stress and its damaging effects on your hair, try meditation, regular exercise, keeping a regular sleep schedule, or any other activity that you know will help ease your stress levels.

How to Get Happy Fast

Proven Strategies to Give You a Quick Mood Boost

Audrey Hepburn once said, “I believe that happy girls are the prettiest girls.” Indeed, people who are happy seem to glow from within and light up a room. And sure, we all want to be happy (not to mention pretty), but when you're feeling blue, getting happy seems a lot easier said than done. But there actually are simple, effective tricks you can try to give yourself a quick mood boost, whether you're feeling really down in the dumps or simply want to add a little more of a skip to your step.

Music Therapy
Music is incredibly powerful. In a three-minute time span it can make you sad, nostalgic, calm and most importantly--happy.

“When I’m feeling a few shades of blue, nothing lifts my spirits more than putting on my favorite tunes and shimmying away,” says Registered Dietiitian Jacqueline Aizen.

If you feel that music has the same effect on you, it’s for good reason. Research has shown that music triggers a release of dopamine from the reward center in your brain. This release is similar to the reaction that occurs when you are satisfied from eating or sleeping. In other words, more dopamine means a happier you.

The next time you feel yourself slipping into a grumpy mood, crank up the happy tunes and get that dopamine releasing. It won’t hurt to move around a bit either.

“Movement can also trigger powerful emotions and when combined with some amazing tracks, you’ll be on cloud nine in no time,” says Aizen. Really, who can’t be happy when they’re dancing around to their favorite bubbly song?

Meditation
For anyone who has ever meditated, you know it can leave you feeling calm, relaxed and joyful. While you may not have time for a deep, extended meditation session, you can adapt the breathing exercises into a quick get-happy routine.

“There are many forms of meditation to explore, but a quick breathing exercise is sometimes all you need to get started,” explains Certified Wellness Coach Elizabeth McGann.

Follow her simple 4-step “Better Mood Breath” Exercise routine:
1. Sit up tall in a chair or seating on the floor. Close your eyes, put one hand in the center of your chest and one hand over your belly button.
2. Take a deep breath in through your nose for the count of eight. Feel your belly expand with the breath.
3. Hold your breath for the count of eight.
4. Exhale slowly through your nose for the count of 10.
Repeat the steps three times and feel your mood gently lift.

So why do meditation methods such as this work? “When we take a deep breath several things happen,” explains Certified Life Coach and Hypnotist Michelle Brock, “not only do we allow more oxygen into our bodies, which creates an instant ‘perk up’ in our brains and our bodies, but we also allow ourselves to slow down for a moment in order to mindfully breathe.”

Exercise
“Exercise gives you endorphins. Endorphins make you happy. Happy people just don’t shoot their husbands.” Oh, Elle Woods, you’re so wise. Exercise is a great way to combat a grumpy mood.

“The mind and body are connected,” explains McGann, “and when you need to change the dial on your emotions, a great way to do that is to move your body.”
Even if you only have a few minutes, step outside for a brisk walk. The exercise combined with the fresh air will quickly get you in a happier place. If you've got a little more time, go for run, try out a new fitness class, or practice yoga. Making exercise a regular part of your daily routine can also help prevent a cranky mood from getting its grip on you in the first place.

Be Altruistic
It's impossible to do good deeds and not get a little positive emotional boost. A lot of times we’re so hyper-focused on our own problems that we forget that those around us might need a little pick me up.

“Too much time in your head ruminating on your problem, or state of mind, is what is causing you to stay stuck in your bad mood,” says McGann. So try to reach out and be there for someone else: "A few minutes cheering up a friend in need can do wonders to change your perspective,” she notes.

Think about small things you can do to help out a family member, elderly neighbor or a local charity. When you take the energy you’re expending sulking and re-focus it on helping others, whatever is bringing you down becomes lighter and your mood shifts.

Laugh
Laughter really is the best medicine. “Laughter releases the endorphins in our brain that shifts us into a place of better well-being,” explains McGann.

Taking a few minutes out of your day to laugh with a friend can really brighten your mood. Or, McGann recommends googling your favorite comedian and watching a clip or two of their material. If you have a favorite passage from a comedian’s book, read over it. Tina Fey’s “Bossypants” and Mindy Kaling’s “Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?” are both great funny go-to reads. It’s almost impossible to stay in a bad mood once you’re cracking up.

Getting your giggle on has also been shown to stimulate circulation, relax muscles, and active and relieve your body’s stress response. If that’s not enough to get you smiling, laughter can also improve your immune system by releasing neuropeptides that fight illness and cause the body to release its own natural painkillers.

Fake it Til You Make It
And if you can't find anything to actually make you laugh, try at least putting on a non-genuine smile. According to recognized happiness expert Gretchen Rubin, the simple act of smiling can induce a positive mood, even when the smile is artificial. So act happy to get happy.

Plan Something FunEven if you're currently stuck in a drab, gray cubicle, researching a romantic weekend getaway or girls' trip can boost your mood.

Gretchen Rubin says, "Studies show that having fun on a regular basis is a pillar of happiness, and anticipation is an important part of that pleasure. Try to involve friends or family, as well; people enjoy almost all activities more when they're with other people."

And if all else fails, you can always YouTube clips of Channing Tatum in Magic Mike. Not that we've ever done that or anything...

5 Breathing Exercises to Quickly Calm Down & Get Happier

Breathing Practices to Help Different Types of Problems

So many problems can be solved with a few deep breaths. Really. Doing controlled breathing exercises is a quick, convenient and effective (not to mention free) way to reduce feelings of stress and tension, boost confidence, ease muscle tension and pain, improve concentration, lower blood pressure and promote a general feeling of calm.

And different types of breathing exercises can promote different types of wellbeing. So the next time you find yourself in each of these types of situations below, allow yourself to slow down for a moment to practice a mindful breathing exercise.

To Combat a Bad Mood or Anxiety

Next time you feel yourself slipping into a gloomy, blue mood or starting to feel pangs of anxiety, step back and take a moment to center your breathing.

“A few moments focusing on your breath in a meditation can do wonders to quiet the negative thoughts and get you centered into a calmer, more balanced state,” explains certified wellness coach for women in recovery Elizabeth McGann.

McGann recommends the “Better Mood Breath” exercise:
1.     Sitting up straight in a chair or sitting on the floor, close your eyes and put one hand in the center of your chest and one hand over your belly button.
2.     Take a deep breath in through your nose for eight counts, feeling your belly expand with the breath.
3.     Hold your breath for a count of eight.
4.     Exhale your breath slowly through your nose for the count of 10.
5.     Repeat three times.

To Control Your Temper
We get it, when you’re pissed off the last thing you want to do is to sit down, be calm and do some pansy little breathing exercise. But really, that anger you’re harboring inside (or that’s about to explode outwardly) isn’t good for yourself or anyone around you.

Knowing how anger affects your body, it’s easy to see how breathing can help to calm you. “When something triggers your primitive wiring, it sounds your body’s alarm bells,” explains marriage and family therapist Lisa Bograd, “you experience shallow breath, a racing heart rate and tense muscles.”

To compose yourself the next time someone makes a snide comment or cuts you off in traffic, Bograd recommends stopping, taking a deep breath where you focus on breathing from your lower belly instead of from your chest. This is because, as Bograd explains, when you breathe from your chest, your breathing is shallow. This excites the nervous system, feeding the stress or anger you’re trying to calm.

Temper Controlling Breathing Exercise
1.     Do not engage in an angry reaction. Stop, take a deep, full breath from your lower belly. In through the nose, out through the mouth.
2.     Repeat.
3.     Repeat a calming word or phrase such as “relax” or “it’s going to be okay.”
4.     Remind yourself that you are in control of your responses and that the trigger setting off your anger is not worth the sacrifice of your peace of mind.

Reduce Tension + Increase Energy
Perhaps in a yoga class you’ve practiced the humming breathing exercise, often referred to as humming bee breath. This practice helps to loosen chest tightness commonly associated with stress, reduce tension, improve your circulation, increase energy levels, and promote a clearer mental state.

Humming Breathing Exercise:
1.     Sit on the floor with your legs crossed at the ankles or with one leg crossed over the other. Sit up straight with your hands rested on your knees and your eyes closed.
2.     Take a few deep, slow breaths in and out.
3.     On the next deep breath, slowly exhale through your nose keeping your lips closed, teeth slightly parted and making a humming sound (“hummmm”) as you exhale.
4.     Inhale through the nose without humming and then exhale while humming.
5.     Repeat the process 10 times.

To Calm Your Nerves + Promote Focus

It’s common for nerves to try to abduct your body before a big presentation or meeting. Instead of letting the butterflies in your stomach get the best of you, take a few quiet minutes to yourself and perform an alternate nostril breathing exercise. It’s not as weird as it sounds—promise.

This practice is believed to calm and center the mind, keep you in the present moment, and harmonize the left and right hemispheres of the brain to promote mental clarity and relaxation. It can also be very energizing, so do this breathing exercise when you when you want to be focused, calm, and alert.

Alternate Nostril Breathing Exercise:
1.     Keeping your mouth closed for the entirety of the exercise, raise your right hand and place your thumb against your right nostril. You can lean your index and middle fingers on the space between your eyebrows. Cover your right nostril with your right thumb. Exhale slowly through your left nostril.
2.     Still holding your right thumb over your right nostril, inhale slowly through your left nostril.
3.     Now raise your right thumb off of your right nostril, and cover your left nostril with your pinkie finger (on your right hand). Slowly exhale out of your right nostril. Then slowly inhale through your right nostril.
4.     Once you’ve completed one full round (exhaling then inhaling out of one nostril and then the other), repeat the process nine times.

To Wake You Up
To warm up your body, wake up your brain, and release dull, sleepy (or even negative) energy from your system, do like the yogis and start your day off right with this “skull shining” breath exercise.

The great thing about this exercise is you can do it quickly anywhere—lying in bed, at the breakfast table, sitting in traffic, etc.

Skull Shining Breathing Exercise
1.     Take one long slow breath in through your nose.
2.     Focusing on releasing the breath from your lower abdomen, exhale through your nose in one quick, powerful movement. (Remember to keep your mouth closed throughout the exercise.)
3.     The exercise may seem awkward at first, as it’s pretty abdominal focused.

Repeat this pattern of inhaling and exhaling through your nose for a total of 10 breaths, resting for one to two seconds after each exhale.

Do Juice Cleanses Work & Should You Do One?

What You Need to Know Before Considering a Juice Cleanse

Juice cleanses are all the rage these days—and not just with hardcore health junkies like Gwyneth Paltrow. Enduring three to five days of ingesting only fresh pressed juices is a difficult feat, but perhaps worth it if such a cleanse really does live up to its promises of quickly detoxing your system, clearing your mind and helping you drop pounds.

But do juice cleanses really work? Are they safe? Should you try one? All hotly debated questions. Our experts weigh in on both sides of the argument so you can arm yourself with the necessary info to make the best decision for you.

The Cons of Cleansing Whether your goal is to detox or lose weight, cleanses (whether based on juice or other types of nutrition plans) are a controversial issue among health and wellness experts for several good reasons:

1. There’s little evidence.
"Detox diets have little scientific evidence supporting their efficacy, and any research on their safety is scarce, at best,” explains internist Dr. Andrea Ruman, MD.
Our bodies (specifically the liver and kidneys) are designed to remove toxins on their own—without the help of a cleanse.

2. They’re not sustainable.
"While people can lose weight rapidly on a detox diet, unfortunately most people regain the weight once they revert back to their usual eating habits,” explains Dr. Ruman. Certified personal trainer and nutritionist Maria Ramsdell agrees, “Cleanses are so extreme that they are not sustainable and you will gain the weight back.”

Ramsdell adds, “You may cut out some of your sugar cravings, but there are much safer ways to do that.”

The most effective way to lose weight and keep it off, as any good health expert will tell you, is to do it gradually. “Long-term weight loss is usually best accomplished by slow, steady weight loss (approximately 0.5 to 2 pounds weekly) coupled with regular exercise," Dr. Ruman advises.

3. They can have negative side effects.
“When you cleanse you’re actually slowing down your metabolism,” explains Ramsdell. “You will also most likely experience low energy while on a cleanse due to the minimal caloric intake” and limited protein consumption.

Apart from feeling lethargic, Dr. Ruman warns of cleanse-induced dehydration, dizziness, constipation and fatigue. The dive in caloric intake can also deprive your body of the nutrients it needs to keep your immune system functioning properly. As a result, you may be more susceptible to bacterial and viral infections.

Surprisingly, an additional side effect of cleansing is that you may actually end up gaining weight. Many cleanses only allow you to consume a limited type of food, like juice for example, which, as registered dietitian Jennifer Regester observes, makes a lot of her clients ultimately “feel horrible and end up binging because they are unsatisfied.”

The Pros of Cleansing
Despite the cons, there are also potential benefits to cleansing and many people who swear by them, saying that cleansing helps boost their mental clarity, gives them increased energy and aids digestion. And, of course, can result in weight loss.

And, on juice cleanses, you get a heavy dose of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. Most of the nutrients in fruits and vegetables are in their juices, and by extracting the juice and not eating the fiber/pulp, you can consume the nutrients of a lot more fruits and vegetables than you could by eating them whole (it takes many servings of fruits/veggies to get a 16 ounce mixed juice—more servings than you’d eat in a single snack). So juicing gives you a higher dose and concentration of nutrients than you’d get eating whole fruits and vegetables (since you'd eat fewer of them).

Naturopathic doctor Thalia Farshchian finds juice cleanses to be “incredibly effective,” and says, “I do one twice a year and have been for the last five years.”

Farshcian often recommends juice cleanses to help patients suffering from inflammatory diseases, allergies, chronic pain, autoimmune diseases or bloating.
Since juice cleanses help flush excess fluids from your system and reduce bloating, you’re certainly likely to lose weight and find that your tummy is flatter. While that’s nice and we’re putting it in the “pros” column, much of this weight loss is likely short-lived since much of it is just water weight.

Many people also find that cleanses can help eradicate your cravings for sweets and other junk food. “Most patients will not want to go back to junk food or alcohol immediately after this regimen because the body feels good from being cleansed,” explains integrative medicine physician Dr. Julie Chen, MD. Indeed, when we stop feeding our cravings, eventually they can go away. (For more tips to help steer clear of junk food cravings, check out our tips for healthy food swaps to satisfy your cravings.)

Cleanses, like juice cleanses, can help curb cravings, and give you the kick you may need to change your habits and get on track to lead a healthy lifestyle.

Doing a Juice Cleanse the Right Way
So if you’re mentally and physically up for the challenge of doing a juice cleanse, go into it with the mindset that it’s a way to kick-start a long-term healthy eating plan, not a quick weight loss solution (otherwise you may be sorely disappointed).

And, use our experts’ advice to make sure you’re cleansing the right way:

1. You Need to be Right for a Juice Cleanse
For a cleanse to have a positive outcome, you need to be in the right state of health to do one. Cleansing “can be both physically and emotionally difficult as your body is adapting to this new way of eating,” explains registered dietitian Mary Barbour. Consider your current state of health (and ideally chat you’re your doctor or a registered dietitian) before determining if you should do a juice cleanse, as it could really put a strain on your body and mind. And certainly first consult your doctor if you have any medical conditions or are on any medications.

Do not do a juice cleanse while pregnant or nursing (your body just can’t afford the dip in calories and diverse nutrients), though you certainly can add fresh pressed juices to your normal, balanced diet for added nutrients.

2. Correct Juice Ingredients
“Juice should mainly be made from green veggies,” explains certified holistic and clinical nutritionist Pamela Warren. “It’s really important to juice this way as the amount of fructose in sweet vegetables like carrots and beets, and mostly all fruits, are not healthful to ingest in juice form.”

You want to avoid fructose because as Warren explains, “An overabundance of fructose [can lead to being] overweight, obesity, elevated triglycerides, fatty liver disease and type 2 diabetes.”

Try to include plenty of vegetables like kale, spinach, swiss chard, cucumbers, celery, parsley and red peppers when preparing your juice. For added sweetness, you can also include a small carrot, half an apple, beet or pear—just don’t overdo it.

3. Warm Weather Cleansing
Dr. Farshchian recommends doing cleanses when the weather is warmer. “Eating food creates heat for our bodies,” she explains. When cleansing, your body doesn’t have as much energy to create warmth and you may find that you feel chilly. So cleansing “feels a bit harder when it is cold.”

If you do cleanse during winter months, Dr. Farshchian says you can help your body stay warm by drinking herbal teas. Consider trying some of these teas with great health benefits.

4. Juice Preservation
You’ll want to properly store your juice and drink it as fresh as possible. As soon as juice is extracted and it’s exposed to air, it begins to oxidize. The more its exposed to air, the more its nutrients deplete. Plus, the longer juice sits around, the more chance bacteria has to grow in it. So try to drink your juice within one day of making it.

If you make your juice at home in the morning and drink it throughout the day, Dr. Farschcian recommends adding some lemon juice and filling your container to the brim before tightly sealing the lid (a mason jar can be a good container option).
And be sure to always keep your juice refrigerated.

5. Ease In & Out
To have the best experience, Dr. Chen recommends a vegan/vegetarian diet starting two to three days prior to a cleanse. And carefully plan your cleanse timing so that you won’t need to engage in strenuous activities and have time to rest on the actual cleanse days. (Sounds like a fabulous excuse to lounge in PJs and watch chick flicks all weekend.)

Immediately following your cleanse, Dr. Chen recommends easing back into normal eating by doing another three days of a vegan/vegetarian diet.

“By allowing your body to enter into an anti-inflammatory state for about nine days, [assuming your actual cleanse is three days], the overall health benefits should be noticeable,” explains Dr. Chen.

“Also, by easing into and out of the fast, it is gentler on your body and less of a shock to the system.” As a result, Dr. Chen says detoxers will tend to respond better to the cleanse and with fewer of those unwanted side effects we mentioned earlier.

6. Buddy System
It’s always easier to get through a cleanse if you’re doing it with a friend, family member or colleauge. That means you could be doing the same cleanse together, or, if you’re doing it alone, at least check in with someone regularly to tell them how it’s going and get their support. Doing a juice cleanse is hard for most of us, and a little moral support can help a lot.

A Simpler Cleanse Alternative
“I find that when people cut out processed foods they experience some amazing changes in their bodies,” explains registered dietitian Mary Barbour.

Indeed, many of the benefits of juicing—like feeling cleansed and potentially more energetic, losing weight, and curbing cravings—may be achieved by simply cutting out all processed foods, sodas and unhealthy fats from your diet for a week. This suddenly sounds easy…when you compare it to a juice cleanse.

See how you feel after a week of eating a diet rich in whole, organic foods: load up on vegetables at each meal, eat a couple of servings of fruit a day (you don’t want to overdo it on fructose), and have three to four ounces of a lean protein like fish or chicken twice per day. Limit the carbs you’re eating to one serving per meal of whole grains such as quinoa, whole grain bread or brown rice. And, of course, no processed foods or fatty animal products (meats, cheeses, etc.).

As register dietitian Jennifer Regester says, “Bottom line:  Have your juice and enjoy it. But no need to limit yourself to a juice detox in order to be healthy.”
