Skin Needs Moisturizer in the Summer Too

For most people, sunscreen is a given in the summer, even year round. But many people neglect moisturizer when temperatures are high, and that's a mistake.

"A lot of people don't think they need to use as much moisturizer in the summer. They might feel like their skin is greasier, but they should keep up the same moisturizing regimen they use in the winter, especially if they spend time in an air-conditioned environment," says Ray Jalian, cosmetic dermatologist at UCLA Medical Center.

Artificially dehumidified air dries the skin, which makes wrinkles and fine lines look more pronounced. Jalian recommends that people apply a noncomedogenic moisturizer (one that won't clog pores) to their face two or three times per day, all year round.
To keep skin looking its best, he also recommends that people use a sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, that they don't smoke cigarettes and that they regularly use products containing vitamin A derivatives, such as retinol or Tretinoin. By increasing the rate of cellular turnover, these products exfoliate the skin, soften fine lines and improve skin texture and tone. With long-term use, they also stimulate the skin to synthesize new collagen fibers.

"It's perfectly OK to use these products in the summer, but the caveat is they do dry out the skin — and they make the skin more sensitive to the sun," says Jalian.

He tells patients going on a sunny vacation or to the beach "to skip it for a few days before and during the vacation, then start again when they return."
Likewise, such people should hold off on dermatologic procedures such as chemical peels and laser treatments until fall or winter. Not only do these treatments leave the skin more susceptible to sun damage, but the chance of discoloration following the procedure is higher with sun exposure.

He adds that people can still get injectable treatments such as Botox or dermal fillers. "These injections are deep, so they're not disturbing the top layer where sun damage occurs."

Retin-A: How and When to Apply for the Best Results

From clearing acne to preventing aging, retinoid is a hero ingredient—but using it can be tricky. Here’s how to best apply it for your most beautiful skin ever.

If there’s a grand taskmaster in skincare, it’s the class of ingredients known as retinoids. These derivatives of vitamin A, often referred to as the brand name Retin-A, do it all. They can clear acne by preventing skin cells from clogging pores, and increase cell turnover rates and stimulate the production of new collagen to improve and even reverse symptoms of aging like wrinkles, age spots and a dull complexion.

So why isn’t everyone and their mother using one? Well, as a dermatologist, that’s what I’d like to know! Any woman or man who is aging is a candidate for retinoids, including every skin tone from the fairest to deepest.

The most common complaint is that side effects like drying, flaking and irritation can make the ingredient difficult for many to comfortably incorporate into skincare routines. The good news: how you apply the retinoid makes all the difference. If you follow my tips, you can have both an enjoyable experience and glowing skin results.

What is the difference between retinoids and retinol?

Retinoids require a prescription and have a higher concentration of retinoic acid, while retinols can be purchased over the counter and have a weaker concentration of the active ingredient.

Ask for a well-tolerated option. Today’s retinoids are much better than older ones, since they’re more targeted to produce results in less irritating formulations. Ask your dermatologist for a newer pick. My personal favorite for patients is Tazorac 0.05% for a prescription, and Skin Medica’s Retinol Complex line that comes in various strengths for over the counter use.

Apply retinold after moisturizer. Sure, you can apply retinoid right after cleansing—though this increases your chance of unwanted side effects. Applying retinoid as a final step after moisturizing at night creates a nice buffer between your skin and the active ingredient. Studies show that you will still get the same benefits with a much lower risk of irritation.

Use a pea-size amount for your whole face. This is a prime example where very little goes a long way. Using just a smidge the size of a pea, apply the product to your forehead, both cheeks and chin to ensure even distribution, and then quickly use your fingers to spread as a thin layer over your entire face. Avoid the area directly underneath your eyes, as it’s too thin and sensitive for retinoid use.
Scale back if you’re sensitive. Yes, even sensitive skin can use and benefit from retinoids! If you have skin that is prone to flaking or easily turns red, you can scale back from daily application and use your retinoid on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights. Very sensitive skin can downgrade to as infrequently as once a week, and still enjoy cumulative results.

Apply at night and wear SPF 30 daily. Sunrays break retinoids down, so they should only be applied at night. And since retinoids speed up cell turnover, your skin will become more sensitive to the sun. It’s imperative you wear a daily sunscreen of at least SPF 30 every day to protect your face, and reapply as needed if you’re out and about. Wear a hat that shades your face if you’re exposed to sunlight for more than about 15 minutes.

Stay consistent and patient. Retinoids aren’t worth your time if you only apply the lotion when you remember. Whether you use it every day or once a week, staying on schedule is key to treating skin on a cellular level that produces visible results on the surface. And keep in mind that big changes don’t happen overnight; they take some time. It’ll take several weeks to see beautiful skin, but I promise that it’s well worth the wait!

Facial Massage

Facial Massage -- the ULTIMATE Anti-Aging Treatment

© Yanik Chauvin | Dreamstime.comHead and neck de-stress massage brings relief to those who suffer stiffness around the neck and tight shoulders, migraines, stress, eyestrain and insomnia, greatly improving circulation! Aromatherapy combined with lymphatic and pressure point massage of the upper chest, neck and face brings relief of colds, congestion, blocked ears and sinusitis. Vital energy will flow freely as blood circulation is increased.

The face is full of small, sensitive muscles. Tension and age causes the connective tissue between the layers of the facial skin and the facial muscles to become less supple over time. Habitual expressions such as frown lines, rigid jaws and squinting eyes can become set.

The gentle and relaxing pressure of a proper facial massage can loosen up the facial muscles, soothe congested eyelids, smooth the eye contour and leave you feeling relaxed and refreshed! Circles under the eye and facial wrinkles are reduced, and your complexion will be toned and glowing due to the selection of proper active ingredients!

The face needs exercise. The stimulating effect of nimble fingers massaging the face helps stimulate, nourish, and firm the skin!

Skin care: 5 easy ways to keep pimples at bay

Acne is amongst the most common skin problems that people of all age groups, especially teenagers face. There can be many reasons that attribute to the cause of acne like stress, puberty, hormonal changes, menopause etc.

Here are a few acne defense tips and reminders:
-Wash your face properly. It is recommended to clean your face twice a day and not more than that as it can leave your skin more oily.

-Always remember to wear sunblock as the sun has UVA and UVB rays which initially may worsen those pimples.

-Don't use make-up all the time or if required switch to water based make-up.

-Caffeinated drinks like coffee and tea are a strict no-no as they harm the skin a lot and further aggravate acne problem.

-Avoid using soaps as they damage skin by making it drier, rougher and more permeable to bacteria.

And of course we recommend regular facials by one of our estheticians.  Call today to schedule an appointment - 831-373-2273

Skincare should start early

Skincare should start early

All your skincare and beauty problems answered.

My daughter is nine years old and is required to attend school activities most of the time. I’ve noticed recently that her face is getting drier and darker. May I know, at her age now, is it advisable for her to apply moisturizer or sunblock everyday? If not, when is the best time for her to start? – Teresa

Product trainer Regenn Lee says that external aggressors such as pollution and the harshness of the sun do not recognize age. These will harm and damage the skin, regardless whether you are a child or an adult. Outdoor activities and excessive exposure to the sun are bound to cause UV damage, which appears initially as merely a darker skin tone and dehydration.

The darker skin tone is due to the overproduction of melanin. In between the epidermis and dermis, there are cells called melanocytes which, when exposed to ultraviolet radiation from the sun, will produce melanin.

This is absorbed by keratinocytes, which use it to protect themselves from the UV rays as a form of “sunshade”. This melanin response to UV becomes a natural sunscreen, providing protection to the keratinocyte cells by absorbing UV radiation, resulting in a visible tan.

This explains why your daughter’s skin gets darker after her outdoor activities. In the long run, overexposure to the sun will lead to hyperpigmentation which will be more prominent later when she becomes an adult. Prolonged exposure also causes water to evaporate from the surface, reducing the water and natural oil content in the skin.

Children may be too young for more intensive or targeted skincare. But a proper skincare regimen is recommended as soon as the child is able to be take ownership of taking care of her own skin. At different stages of our lives, our skin requires very specific needs that evolve over time.
At the tender age of nine, a child’s skin is still healthy and able to exfoliate naturally. The key is giving them the correct products to use, and this should be basic, water-based, light textured, non-comedogenic, gentle on the skin, yet able to meet her skin’s needs.

So, do use a moisturizer and sunblock every day for your daughter. She also needs to clean and tone her skin properly to keep a healthy skin.

A very mild and gentle cleanser helps to remove impurities and dirt, without drying the skin, and soften skin’s texture.

Skin in America - Where Should You Live for Younger Looking Skin?

The Best (and Worst) States for Skin in America

For younger-looking skin, consider moving to Minnesota, Hawaii and New York.

Our Skin Age Quiz, taken by 28,000 women, found statistically significant differences in skin age from state to state. The quiz examines how factors like lifestyle, habits, genetics, nutrition and stress levels affect the look of your skin, using a proprietary algorithm to determine the results.

In the grand beauty-scheme, most of the nation’s skin looks a tad older than its age, but the east and west coasts fair the best, only looking about a year older. The states with the biggest areas to benefit, beauty-wise, are Wyoming and Oklahoma, where citizens have skin that looks, on average, three years older than its age.

What’s contributing to a higher skin age? Women in Wyoming and Oklahoma eat less fruit than the highest performing states, but the biggest factor seems to be sun damage. Fifty-five percent of women in Wyoming and 44 percent of women in Oklahoma reported getting blistering sunburns before the age of 20. In the youngest-looking states, this average was 28 percent.
