Skin Needs Moisturizer in the Summer Too

For most people, sunscreen is a given in the summer, even year round. But many people neglect moisturizer when temperatures are high, and that's a mistake.

"A lot of people don't think they need to use as much moisturizer in the summer. They might feel like their skin is greasier, but they should keep up the same moisturizing regimen they use in the winter, especially if they spend time in an air-conditioned environment," says Ray Jalian, cosmetic dermatologist at UCLA Medical Center.

Artificially dehumidified air dries the skin, which makes wrinkles and fine lines look more pronounced. Jalian recommends that people apply a noncomedogenic moisturizer (one that won't clog pores) to their face two or three times per day, all year round.
To keep skin looking its best, he also recommends that people use a sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) that contains titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, that they don't smoke cigarettes and that they regularly use products containing vitamin A derivatives, such as retinol or Tretinoin. By increasing the rate of cellular turnover, these products exfoliate the skin, soften fine lines and improve skin texture and tone. With long-term use, they also stimulate the skin to synthesize new collagen fibers.

"It's perfectly OK to use these products in the summer, but the caveat is they do dry out the skin — and they make the skin more sensitive to the sun," says Jalian.

He tells patients going on a sunny vacation or to the beach "to skip it for a few days before and during the vacation, then start again when they return."
Likewise, such people should hold off on dermatologic procedures such as chemical peels and laser treatments until fall or winter. Not only do these treatments leave the skin more susceptible to sun damage, but the chance of discoloration following the procedure is higher with sun exposure.

He adds that people can still get injectable treatments such as Botox or dermal fillers. "These injections are deep, so they're not disturbing the top layer where sun damage occurs."

Is It Really OK to Stop Sudsing Up Your Hair?

Cleansing with just conditioner? The trend—long popular among women with naturally thick, curly, or coarse strands—is becoming mainstream, thanks to several new products designed for all hair types.

Co-Washing: Is It Really OK to Stop Sudsing Up Your Hair?

Browse a few online beauty forums, and you’ll find proponents of “co-washing” touting the benefits of cleansing strands with specially formulated conditioners instead of shampoo. (We even reported the “anti-shampoo” movement here).

Among them: Suds-free formulas can moisturize dry scalps, reduce frizz, detangle knots, and soften texture. African-American women have long used conditioners instead of lathering shampoos to refresh strands and help keep them moisturized and glossy, and now new non-foaming and low-lather formulas from companies such as Ojon, Palmer’s, Purely Perfect, and Kerastase, Vidal Sassoon Pro and Wen are geared towards those with straight, fine hair as well. Though it may seem like a gateway to build-up, tiny amounts of detergent in these products remove dirt and grime without stripping color or natural oils (traditional lathers, which often contain harsh sulfates, make hair squeaky clean, but frequently leave it brittle, frizzy, and damaged), so they are gentler than even the gentlest shampoo.
Think of it, if you will, as the hair-care equivalent of hand-washing your favorite cashmere sweater. Like dry shampoos, these formulas can be used between regular washes, but they're laced with ultra-rich ingredients that smooth and lock in moisture, so they're more than just a temporary fix.

Over time, they can save money, precious minutes, and even a need for masks or styling products.
But before you think about swapping your regular conditioner for shampoo, be warned: “The silicone in traditional conditioners would eventually create residue,” says  Michael Gordon, a celebrity stylist and the creator of Purely Perfect (as any fine-haired woman who’s mistakenly grabbed the wrong bottle can tell you). “These new products are similar to the high-end, non-foaming cleansers that you’d use on your face because they contain oils and moisturizers, but have a specific cleansing system, so your hair does gets clean,” Gordon says. With continued use, they claim to help restore hair’s natural vibrancy and oil balance, giving you that “Very much desired ‘second-day hair look’ on the first wash,” Gordon says. The pros? Smoother, healthier strands, plus fewer products to get there.

The cons? If you enjoy working up a good lather in the shower, you’ll be robbed of the experience.
Though I don’t wash my long, super-thick, wavy, color-treated Indian hair on a daily basis (it’s more like three times a week), I was a bit skeptical about trying this new trend. As someone who swims frequently and spends a lot of time outdoors in hot, sunny Los Angeles, I do appreciate the “so fresh, and so clean, clean” feeling of a nicely-scented, lathering shampoo. In general, I don’t use styling products (they tend to weigh my hair down), but I still had some concerns about build-up and oiliness.
Courtesy PhotosFrom left: Ojon Rare Blend Moisture-Rich Cleansing Conditioner, $27; Palmer's Olive Oil Co-Wash Cleansing Cream, $10; Vidal Sassoon Pro Series Colorfinity Cleansing Conditioner, $4; Wen Cleansing Condition in Summer Honey Peach, $30 [Limited Edition]

The first day I tried the Palmer’s Olive Oil Co-Wash Cleansing Cream—which contains vitamin E, keratin protein, and natural herbal extracts—I was admittedly surprised by the great results. I massaged a small amount from roots to ends, just as I would a conditioner, and rinsed. I ended up skipping conditioner altogether, since my hair felt smoother in the shower already. The scent, very green, seemed like an organic, non-chemical shampoo, and though different from the perfumed shampoos I’m used to, was actually fresh and clean-feeling.

But, the best and most noticeable thing was how soft it made my hair; Touchably soft to the point that I wanted to wear it down instead of in my go-to top knot all day. The next day, I went for a swim, and used the co-wash again. There wasn’t a single trace of chlorine left in my strands: Just smooth, nicely-scented hair.

I don’t think I’ll be giving up shampoo altogether, but in-between washes, I’d definitely incorporate a cleansing cream to moisturize and soften my normally dry hair.

Bare Minimum Beauty & Hygiene Routine for Lazy Nights

Simplest Nighttime Bathroom Routine Needed to Get By

You’ve probably read all about what you need to be doing before bed to maintain and improve your skin, and it can amount to a long, daunting list. Removing your makeup, cleansing, exfoliating, using masks, applying toner, dabbing on acne treatments, moisturizing, slathering on eye cream, etc. Then there’s the work to maintain basic hygiene: brushing, flossing, mouthwash, eye care, washing your hair, etc. That’s a lot of tedious work when all you want to do is unwind and get to bed.

So for the days when you’re feeling particularly lazy, we’ve pared down that nighttime routine list to the bare minimum experts recommend you should be doing to stay in proper form, based on your specific issues and needs.

Facial Cleansing
Whether you’re wearing makeup or not, it’s important to wash your face to remove the dirt and germs you pick up in day-to-day life and whenever you touch your face. Washing your face gives your face a clean slate, so to speak, so your skin can embark on its natural exfoliating and rejuvenation process while you sleep. This is probably why some research has shown that cleansing before bed can give keep your skin more youthful.

But for those tired, lazy nights, just how diligent you need to be with your face washing depends on your skin type.

Dry Skin (or Normal)

For dry skin, you have a little leeway when it comes to your facial cleansing. Opt for a creamy (non-soap) cleanser, which has moisturizing properties. Wet your face with warm water, work the cleanser into your skin using your fingers and then rinse and pat dry with a clean towel. Make sure the water is not too hot as this can make your skin feel tight and dry it out even more. Though your skin needs extra moisture, you can skip it every now and then if you’ve used a moisturizing cleanser.

Absolute worst case, in the laziest of scenarios, with dry skin you’re more able to get away with just splashing your face with water and rubbing it off with a clean towel. This will remove a basic layer of makeup, dirt, etc. that’s on your skin before bed.

If you’ve missed a little makeup residue on your skin from your quick cleansing routine, just know that the makeup may slightly dehydrate your skin, licensed esthetician Daniela Ferri explains. She says that leaving makeup on overnight will not cause you to have more wrinkles, but if you have dry skin and it becomes drier from sleeping in your makeup, the dehydration will make your skin appear dull, lackluster and can magnify existing wrinkles.

Oily or Acne-Prone Skin
If you have oily or acne-prone skin, it’s particularly important to make sure you cleanse before bed to remove makeup, excess oils and dirt so you don’t wake up to a breakout. Licensed esthetician Daniela Ferri explains that foundation and powder create a barrier on your skin, and if you’re also producing excessive oil, your pores will quickly get clogged. This leads to blackheads and breakouts.

To remove makeup and grime, dampen your face with warm water and lightly apply a cleanser formulated for oily or acne-prone skin with your fingers. Rinse thoroughly and pat your skin dry with a clean towel.

Or, for a faster approach, simply scrub your face with facial wipes or pads that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide (likely the same ingredients in your cleanser)—keep the wipes by your bed if you’re feeling extra lazy.

Eye Makeup Removal

Regardless of your skin type, it’s important to wash off your eye makeup most nights. Keeping your eye makeup on can lead to eye infections and clogged pores in your eyelids, which can lead to those painful little styes and puffy red eyes.

You can quickly remove eye makeup with makeup remover pads (keep them next to your bed if it means you’re more likely to use them). If you skip the eye makeup removal now and then, it’s not likely to lead to problems, but try to avoid making a habit of it—your skin and pillowcases will thank you.

Moisturizers & Eye Creams

One of the best things you can do to prevent wrinkles from forming is not to apply moisturizer, but to protect your skin from the sun. Because of this, if you’re tired, go ahead and skip your moisturizers and eye cream without feeling guilty. In the morning, you can apply a daily moisturizer and, of course, make sure to apply sunscreen.

(For dry skin, make sure you’ve read the section above on using a moisturizing facial cleanser.)

If you have aging skin, and it’s dry to normal (not oily or acne-prone), you may want to be more vigilant with your night creams. So if you’ve skipped a thorough facial cleansing on a lazy night, you can still apply your anti-aging moisturizer before you hit the sheets—it may be more difficult for it to penetrate your skin, but you’ll still derive benefits from it.

Dental Hygiene
“The recommended brushing time is between 2 to 3 minutes per session with a minimum of two brushing sessions per day,” says dentist Marielaina Perrone, DDS. That being said, we get it, you don’t always want to brush when you’re exhausted—but you really should. So, to cut corners, instead of waiting until bedtime to brush those pearly whites, do it just after you’ve finished dinner. This might also help deter after-dinner munchies (double bonus!).

When it comes to flossing, doing it twice a day would be great, but you really just need to make sure you’re getting it done once a day to fight gum disease. This once-a-day floss can be done when you brush after dinner or even at another time, when you have more motivation, during the day.

As for mouthwash, you don’t really need it. Properly brushing and flossing are enough to do the trick, so unless you just can’t sleep without the minty aftertaste of mouthwash, you can skip it.

Hair Washing
If you’re debating washing and styling your hair before bed because you know you won’t have time in the morning, just go ahead and skip it. Skipping washes is actually beneficial for the health, color preservation and shine of your hair. Washing too frequently depletes the healthy oils from your hair leaving it lackluster and even frizzy.
In the morning, if your hair is looking oily, spritz on dry shampoo (or even baby powder) and style as usual. Worst case, you can always rock the low, chic bun look.

Eye Health

In an ideal world, you would only wear your contacts maximum eight hours per day, but we all slip up on that. If you do wear contacts, though, make sure you wash your hands thoroughly and remove your lenses before bed (or earlier, if you can). Contact lens overuse can cause serious, painful damage to your eyes by blocking oxygen from reaching your cornea amongst other things.

Keep Makeup Minimal in Extreme Heat

The Only Makeup You Need During Extreme Heat

Living in California has many benefits: rare rain showers, a temperate climate, amazing produce! But that beautiful ball of fire in the sky that makes all this possible is constantly beaming down.

Trying to keep my makeup from sliding down my face is not easy friends. Here is what I discovered to be the best, bare-bones makeup routine for extreme heat. Keep your makeup light and simple.

1. Skip foundation. Use sunscreen or SPF tinted primer (see my pick below) all over and only conceal spots that are worthy with a non-oily concealer. Good ol' Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage will do the trick! Since it's so concentrated, you only need a tiny bit to cover redness. Leave the rest of your skin bare. Use blotting papers or one-ply tissues to mattify your T-zone. If you are desperate for added coverage, try mineral powder.

2. Liquid cheek stain is your friend. Dot a cheek stain with real staying power on your cheeks. Liquid formulas won't slide down your face the way cream and powder formulas will. Benefit Benetint is always my go-to.

3. Apply mascara sparingly. Avoid applying it on your lower lashlines—you don't need hungover raccoon eyes all day! I recommend Make Up For Ever Aqua Smoky Lash because it's waterproof.

4. Forget goopy gloss. Sheer tinted balm won't suffocate your lips. I like Cover Girl Lipslicks Smoochies Lip Balm.

And while I think we all like to look a little sun-kissed, those smooches aren’t invisible. They come in the form of sunspots, freckles—even cancer. I don’t like the idea of slathering sunscreen on every body part, but I love being outside in my garden, at the beach and on location for shoots. So I have found a few ways to sneak sunscreen on that aren't greasy, smelly or globby. I hope you’ll adopt them too!

Makeup artist sunscreen picks:
Neova DNA Damage Control SPF 40 is a lightly tinted primer that protects and corrects your skin. It’s not greasy and it’s super lightweight so you can layer anything over it.
Colorescience Sunforgettable Mineral Powder SPF 50 is a great way to mattify and cover redness since it comes in three shades. Layer over your SPF primer for extra coverage.
A long-time favorite of mine, Shiseido Refreshing Sun Protection Spray for Body & Hair Broad Spectrum SPF 16 is lightweight, smells great and while protecting your scalp, it incidentally smoothes frizzies.
And though this is a tad off-topic, I have to throw in that my favorite line of defense is my big-brimmed UPF 50+ hat from Coolibar. If I forgot any of the above, this covers well enough!

What are your favorite ways to sneak on some sun protection?

4 Surprising Makeup Tricks You Need to Try

Our Makeup Expert shares the best beauty tips she's learned from clients, family and friends.

I am always open to learning something new…and I love that there never seems to be any rhyme or reason to my lessons or who they come from. In the “school” of makeup artistry, my teachers are everywhere!

Here are some of the favorite products and tricks that I learned from clients and friends along the way—hope you enjoy them. And feel free post your favorite makeup tricks and tips below in the comments!

Make Up For Ever HD Primer in Apricot
Ape for Apricot
Years ago, while working at a Givenchy show, I met a model who had, to put it nicely, very problematic skin. I can relate as I have the same issues. Before I went to work on perfecting her skin with my usual suspects, she pulled out a product she swore by. (Man, I love when models pack their faves!). The Make Up For Ever HD Primer in Apricot isn’t a shade I would normally lean on for color correcting all the redness she needed muted on her inflamed skin. But it subtly lessened the ruddy tones on her face so that I only needed to touch up a few areas. It’s a quick-dry formula that isn’t too powdery-feeling like some silicone primers, which sit atop the skin and amplify dryness around pimples. Thank goodness for this model citizen!

Maybelline SuperStay 24 in Continuous Coral
Grammy’s Go-To Coral
It’s true. Distinguished ladies love their coral—and my Gram wears it daily. Coral is the perfect shade of orange-y red that brightens up skin of any age. My Gram knows that a lot of the products out there in this shade creep into fine lines and wear off quickly. She loves the Maybelline SuperStay 24 in Continuous Coral. So much so, that in all her 90 years of testing different coral-colored products, she’ll tell you this one’s her favorite. I arrived to a package on my doorstep a year ago with three of these babies for my kit, and I totally agree with her. Gotta love Gram!

mineral powder concealer by Colorescience
The Greatest Cover Up
One of my favorite friends and clients, Stephanie Beatriz of Brooklyn 99 fame, is not only a comic genius, but she’s completely adorable inside and out. One day, as we were glamming her up for a press event, she busted out this amazing mineral powder concealer by Colorescience. I can’t believe I’m admitting this, but in my decade-plus of working in this industry, I hadn’t ever used a powder concealer product so I was skeptical. “Trust,” she said. Sure enough, I layered the correcting shades over a pimple with impeccable timing and it disappeared, taking its shine along with it. I was truly amazed and still am. I use this bad boy frequently now. Thanks, Steph!

Eyelash glue
It's Good to Be the Queen
You can learn the best tips from drag queens. Nobody, and I mean nobody knows how to make eyes look lifted, young and open like they do. I’ve always been addicted to these little eye stickies, which tuck heavy lids ever so slightly to help your eyes turn back time. As I was setting up my makeup table for a six-day commercial shoot, a guy in production who moonlit in drag on weekends walked over to me and said, “Honey, you know you can just use lash glue, right?” Intrigued, I had him show me. Sure enough, you run a trace of lash glue just below or above your droopy spot, open the eyes wide to tack the skin together and bam—eyelift, sans sticker.

I encourage you to pick up your own tricks from your friends, clients and family members. And don’t forget to post your faves here!

Retin-A: How and When to Apply for the Best Results

From clearing acne to preventing aging, retinoid is a hero ingredient—but using it can be tricky. Here’s how to best apply it for your most beautiful skin ever.

If there’s a grand taskmaster in skincare, it’s the class of ingredients known as retinoids. These derivatives of vitamin A, often referred to as the brand name Retin-A, do it all. They can clear acne by preventing skin cells from clogging pores, and increase cell turnover rates and stimulate the production of new collagen to improve and even reverse symptoms of aging like wrinkles, age spots and a dull complexion.

So why isn’t everyone and their mother using one? Well, as a dermatologist, that’s what I’d like to know! Any woman or man who is aging is a candidate for retinoids, including every skin tone from the fairest to deepest.

The most common complaint is that side effects like drying, flaking and irritation can make the ingredient difficult for many to comfortably incorporate into skincare routines. The good news: how you apply the retinoid makes all the difference. If you follow my tips, you can have both an enjoyable experience and glowing skin results.

What is the difference between retinoids and retinol?

Retinoids require a prescription and have a higher concentration of retinoic acid, while retinols can be purchased over the counter and have a weaker concentration of the active ingredient.

Ask for a well-tolerated option. Today’s retinoids are much better than older ones, since they’re more targeted to produce results in less irritating formulations. Ask your dermatologist for a newer pick. My personal favorite for patients is Tazorac 0.05% for a prescription, and Skin Medica’s Retinol Complex line that comes in various strengths for over the counter use.

Apply retinold after moisturizer. Sure, you can apply retinoid right after cleansing—though this increases your chance of unwanted side effects. Applying retinoid as a final step after moisturizing at night creates a nice buffer between your skin and the active ingredient. Studies show that you will still get the same benefits with a much lower risk of irritation.

Use a pea-size amount for your whole face. This is a prime example where very little goes a long way. Using just a smidge the size of a pea, apply the product to your forehead, both cheeks and chin to ensure even distribution, and then quickly use your fingers to spread as a thin layer over your entire face. Avoid the area directly underneath your eyes, as it’s too thin and sensitive for retinoid use.
Scale back if you’re sensitive. Yes, even sensitive skin can use and benefit from retinoids! If you have skin that is prone to flaking or easily turns red, you can scale back from daily application and use your retinoid on Monday, Wednesday and Friday nights. Very sensitive skin can downgrade to as infrequently as once a week, and still enjoy cumulative results.

Apply at night and wear SPF 30 daily. Sunrays break retinoids down, so they should only be applied at night. And since retinoids speed up cell turnover, your skin will become more sensitive to the sun. It’s imperative you wear a daily sunscreen of at least SPF 30 every day to protect your face, and reapply as needed if you’re out and about. Wear a hat that shades your face if you’re exposed to sunlight for more than about 15 minutes.

Stay consistent and patient. Retinoids aren’t worth your time if you only apply the lotion when you remember. Whether you use it every day or once a week, staying on schedule is key to treating skin on a cellular level that produces visible results on the surface. And keep in mind that big changes don’t happen overnight; they take some time. It’ll take several weeks to see beautiful skin, but I promise that it’s well worth the wait!

This Summer's Most Flattering Sunglasses for Your Face Shape

Protect your peepers in these stylish shades designed to balance and flatter your face shape.

As a stylist, I know that the right pair of eyewear can make you look younger, thinner and smarter. Here, the right frames to wear this summer depending on your face shape.

This Summer's Most Flattering Sunglasses for Your Face Shape

Michael by Michael Kors Kai 62mm Aviators
If Your Face Is…Heart ShapedDo you have a broader forehead and cheekbones with a narrow chin? You have a heart-shaped face, like Reese Witherspoon. The key is to broaden the appearance of your chin and bring more proportion to your face. To do this, look for lighter gradient lenses—darker at the top than the bottom. Ombré tinted lenses will downplay your wider forehead while softening the lines of your pointier chin. Super chic aviator styles are a great bet.
Michael by Michael Kors Kai 62mm Aviators, $99

Elizabeth and James Cypress Sunglasses
If Your Face Is…Oval ShapedIf you have an oval-shaped face, you've got relatively balanced features. Oval means your face is longer than it is wide, so you can get away with most styles as long as the frames are no wider than the broadest part of your face. Cat-eye styles work brilliantly for you.
Elizabeth and James Cypress Sunglasses, $195

Tory Burch 57mm Sunglasses
If Your Face Is…Square ShapedGot a strong jawline and broad forehead? Go for frames that are rounded at the edges to soften and balance your face. When you’re trying on frames, look for ones that sit high on your face to downplay the sharpness of your jawline. These expensive-looking, classic frames look great on you and will never go out of style.
Tory Burch 57mm Sunglasses, $149

Karen Walker Number One Tortoise Cats-Eye Sunglasses
If Your Face Is…Round ShapedThe key is to add structure. If you have soft curves with a similar width and length, find frames with strong angular lines to add more definition. Stay away from bright colors and instead look for darker shades like black or tortoiseshell to help minimize the fullness of your face. Go for a pair with slightly higher temples to help to create a longer, leaner face shape.

How to Make Your Hair Grow Faster

Tired of wishing and hoping for your hair to just grow already? Here's how to help move it along a bit.

How to Make Your Hair Grow Faster

If you’ve ever stood in front of the mirror, tugged at your hair and willed it, dared it, to grow, then you understand the particular frustration that comes with hair that just won’t get any longer.

Whether you’re regretting that bold pixie cut or just wish you could change up your look without splurging on extensions, making your hair grow faster is tricky. But it’s not a lost cause: Improving hair’s health and feeding your body the right nutrients for healthy hair will put you on the path to longer, stronger strands.

Everyone has a specific hair cycle for every hair on her body, notes Dr. Francesca Fusco, CLEAR Scalp and Hair Dermatologist, so some women will have hair that grows quickly, while others may have a much longer cycle. One product, Latisse, works by extending the growth cycle of eyelashes. But unfortunately, there’s nothing out there that does the same on your scalp.

“There is no documented pill that I know of which will dramatically speed hair growth; however, with supportive scalp and hair care, your hair will grow strong, resilient and healthy,” says Dr. Fusco. Contrary to popular belief, getting frequent trims will not influence how quickly your hair grows either (sorry!).

Although there’s no magic pill you can pop or serum you can apply that’ll transform you into Rapunzel, there are other ways to influence your rate of hair growth. It's possible you have an underlying issue: you’re not getting the right nutrients, your hair is weak and therefore breaking at a certain point, or maybe your stress levels are so high it’s interrupting your hair growth.

By honing in on these factors, you can boost hair health and give your locks a little extra encouragement.

Healthy Scalp, Healthy Hair“The scalp is the skin that hair follicles sit in,” says Fusco, and it’s where each follicle receives its blood supply, allowing it to grow strong. If you show your scalp a little TLC and make sure it's nourished and healthy, then your hair will in turn be healthy, stronger and more resistant to breakage, allowing it to reach new lengths.

Bolster Against BreakageAssess your hair’s health. If it’s dry or damaged, that means it’s probably breaking before it can reach a certain length, giving the illusion that it grows slowly. “Daily hot tools, chemicals, constant traction from extensions—could all put excessive stress on hair causing it to break,” says Dr. Fusco. Check for split ends or even tiny nodes midshaft, which can also indicate weak points in danger of breakage.
To give your strands a better shot at growing long and strong, cut back on the reckless styling that can lead to breakage. Heat style less often, brush gently and use a moisturizing and reparative hair mask to hydrate hair and nourish the scalp—where hair gets most of its strength.

Load Up on NutrientsIf you’re low in specific nutrients that are essential for hair health, supplementing can help. Look for a multivitamin that’s formulated specifically for hair, nails and skin (it’ll say on the label) to make sure it has these important nutrients for hair health: B vitamins, biotin, cysteine, vitamin C.
“Protein is hair’s best friend,” says Dr. Fusco, as are omega-3 fatty acids. Reach for healthy protein such as eggs and fish and avoid fasting or yoyo dieting. These can deprive your body of these essential building blocks for a healthy scalp and hair.

Stop StressingWe already know too much stress is bad for health and beauty, but did you know there’s a known connection between stress and hair loss, too? “When it is constant it can cause spiking of cortisol levels and this can contribute to increased hair shedding,” says Dr. Fusco. To relieve stress and its damaging effects on your hair, try meditation, regular exercise, keeping a regular sleep schedule, or any other activity that you know will help ease your stress levels.

Pretty Pick Me Up - Spring Lip Must-Haves

POST & PHOTOGRAPHY BY AMY NADINE, GRAPHIC DESIGN BY EUNICE CHUN

Spring is well on its way and nothing feels better than a pretty new lip color! We’ve tested dozens of them and these are our top four favorites to transition into Summer!

  • Coral Lipstick — Charlotte Tilbury K.I.S.S.I.N.G Lipstick. in Coachella Coral is the most feminine pink-orange hybrid you’ve ever tried on. It’s a classic lipstick formula with a satin finish.
  • Fuchsia — Lime Crime Velvetine Liquid Lipstick in Pink Velvet is a bright, happy stain that won’t budge when you set it. I’ve been using it on a lot of my clients this Spring and they don’t even need to re-apply it throughout the night because it doesn’t even fade in the slightest.
  • Peach — Tom Ford Lip Color Shine in Smitten comes in a traditional lipstick bullet but glides on like a shiny gloss (without being goopy). It’s a bit of a splurge but you’ve never felt anything like it.
  • Rose — Tarte Power Pigment Lip Tint in Blushing Bride is a sister lippie to their famous Lip Surgence Lip Tints but is much more intense (while still feeling light like a balm).
Tag us on our social channels if you try any of them! Or please let us know in the comments below what your favorite Spring lip discoveries are!

6 Spring Makeup Rules to Break

This season’s prettiest makeup is about changing the game, beautifully.

Spring Makeup Rules to Break

Old rule: Go bright or go home
New school: Embrace your dark(er) side

Spring lip color usually means punchy shades like coral, bright pink and 2014's standout star, tangerine. But a deeper hue can look gorgeous when the temperature starts to rise. Case in point: Nicole Miller’s Spring 2014 show, where models sported a beautiful berry lip, and Helmut Lang, where a crimson mouth was the order of the day. “Poppy or fuchsia shades work well on bronzed skin, but if you want to break the rules, go in the opposite direction,” says New York City makeup artist Carmindy. “Keep your skin protected with sunscreen and go for a deeper lip.” Try crimson or berry if you have fair to medium skin, and garnet, chocolate or merlot if you have darker skin. “Just make sure to choose a formula that’s sheer and moisturizing,” Carmindy says. “Dry, opaque formulas can look too severe.”

Try:
Aveda Nourish-Mint Sheer Mineral Lip Color in Sheer Muscadine
($16) a hydrating formula with plant and fruit waxes to help soften lip lines, in a beautiful sheer red-wine hue.
Laura Geller Love Me Dew Moisturizing Lip Crayon in Plum Freeze ($16). This supersize pencil feels like a balm but gives lips a nice color payoff, with Vitamin E for moisture and a just-glossy-enough plum tint.

Embrace your dark(er) side
Old rule: Go easy on the eyes
New school: Smoke it up
When models walk the spring runways, their lids and lashes usually lean more towards understated than in-your-face. But at Jill Stuart’s Spring 2014 show, makeup artist Aaron de Mey broke the rules beautifully, creating a smoky eye inspired by “rock stars’ girlfriends.” His one concession to spring: A hint of shimmery silver shadow on the inner corner. Get the look by lining your top and bottom lids (including the waterline) with black pencil, smudging charcoal shadow on your lids, then dusting silver shadow on your inner corners. Finish up by coating your top lashes with black mascara. (Rock star boyfriend entirely optional.)

Try:
L’Oréal Paris Silkissime Eyeliner by Infallible in Black
($9), a tug-free pencil that lives up to its “designed to glide on like silk” marketing hype. And because it’s a long-wear formula, it’s a good choice for lining the easy-to-smear waterline area.
L’Oréal Paris Infallible Eye Shadow in Silver Sky ($8). Dust a smidge of this silver shadow in your inner corners to lighten up a smoky eye. Perfect for spring.
Sephora Collection Outrageous Volume Mascara in Black ($15). The last step to any smoky eye: black mascara. This formula has hyaluronic acid to help keep lashes conditioned.

Spring Makeup Rules to Break
Old rule: Switch to pastels
New school:
Join the navy
A shimmery cream shadow in a deep navy blue looks fresh and unexpected for spring. Think ocean-at-night rather than Easter egg. “Prep your lids with a little powder before applying your cream shadow, and apply it on the lid and under your lower lashline only,” says Carmindy. “Not in the crease, which can get messy.” Then blend a powder shadow in an ever-so-slightly lighter shade of blue into the crease, and apply highlighter under your brows and in your inner corners.

Try:
Shiseido Shimmering Cream Eye Color in Nightfall ($25), a beautiful deep blue that’s easy to smudge on with a fingertip or shadow brush.
Flower Eyes on the Prize Eyeshadow Chubby in Dark Side of the Blue ($8), a paraben-free formula in a no-sharpening-required jumbo pencil. For a sheer application, swirl your fingertip over the pencil and lightly pat on lids.
Carmindy & Co. Carmindizing Highlighter Duo in Ethereal ($27). One half is a cream highlighter and the other half is a powder. We like applying the cream to the browbone and the powder to the inner corners.

Join the navy
Old rule: Step away from the foundation
New school: Be an ace of base

Used to be makeup artists recommended ditching foundation during the spring and summer months and trading down to a tinted moisturizer. But now, there’s a host of new high-coverage formulas that look and feel super light and breathable. So if you prefer the coverage of foundation, there’s no need to switch over to formulas with less oomph when the weather warms up. Apply with your fingers for the most coverage, or try Carmindy’s trick: “Prep a sponge with primer or moisturizer and use that to blend on your foundation,” she says.

Try:
Becca Ultimate Coverage Complexion Cream ($44). This full-coverage formula is highly concentrated, so you need a much smaller amount than you would with a traditional foundation. We love that it comes in a range of shades for every skintone, from super-light porcelain to deep cocoa.
Eve Lom Natural Radiance Mineral Powder Foundation ($50). If you prefer a powder finish, the cult U.K. skincare brand introduces a weightless mineral foundation with light-reflecting amethyst, ruby and rose quartz particles to illuminate the skin and blur imperfections.

Be an ace of base
Old rule: Say hello to shimmer
New school: Meet matte

Spring blushes and bronzers usually have more sparkle than a Broadway show, but a few new spring offerings prove just how fresh and pretty a matte cheek can be. “Some areas of the face need a glow, but it doesn’t always have to be your blush or bronzer,” says Carmindy. “It’s soft and romantic to do a matte cheek, and not as typical.” Bonus: If you struggle with large pores or oily skin, a non-shimmery cheek can work wonders. The matte finish downplays pores and helps keep oil in check.

Try:
Nars Matte Mulitple in Cappadoce ($39). This matte, golden bronze works on a range of skintones. Apply it straight from the tube for more impact, or dampen your fingertips and dab on for a sheerer effect.
Palladio Herbal Matte Blush in Berry Pink ($7). This pretty pink is on the cool side, so it pairs perfectly with a berry lip. Kaolin clay and zinc oxide give a fresh matte finish, while chamomile extract adds an antioxidant boost.

Meet matte
The old rule: Neutrals on nails, brights on toes
The new school: Play the blues
Sure, ballet pink nails and cherry red toenails look gorgeous—we’re not saying they don’t. But why not break the rules and try something a little more attention-getting this spring? “I think it’s great not to follow the typical script of using light colors on nails and darker colors on toes,” says New York City manicurist Jin Soon Choi. “Try a darker shade on your fingernails and a light color on your toes, just to have fun and mix things up a bit.” Color wise, she suggests breaking the typical spring mold and trying cool hues like white, blue or metallic turquoise. Different? Yep. Gorgeous? Absolutely.

Try:
Jin Soon Kookie White
($18). Trade your usual sheer pink for this super-chic white with hints of blue and gray. It’s 5-free (not just 3-free), so your nails will thank you.
Butter London in Airy Fairy ($15), a medium, metallic turquoise that complements every skin tone, from fair to dark.
