30 Day Manicure!

3 Nail Art Designs That Last a Whole Month

Gel manicures are the dopest, amiright? First of all, let's talk about how they are immediately dry (sorry—cured) which means you can fumble around in your purse for tip money without smudging, which is what happens every single time I get a traditional mani.

And you can get cool nail art without worrying that all the hard work will chip within days. Gel nail brand Gelish says their manis last up to three weeks, but the last time I got one that sucker lasted for a whole month.

Ahhh, but therein lies the rub.

If you're trying to stretch it out for a month, as your nails grow, you get that line of bare nail at the base. Maybe if you do light pink it's not such a big deal, but if you have designs or a bright color, it can look janky. The easy solution is to get a nail art design that looks good even as it grows out. Ombré with a clear base will work, or the of-the-moment negative space half moons. Anything that has clear or nude polish at the base is what you want. For instance, feast your eyes on these gorgeous designs.

But you can't just set it and forget it. A month of neglected cuticles is not cute, so keep them from getting straggly with daily care. "Deborah Lippmann Cuticle Oil is incredible; it has jojoba and coconut oils that will soften rough cuticles. You can never apply too often, so I would suggest for readers to apply it at least twice a day," says Eleanor Langston, CEO of Paintbox.

Julie Kandalec, Creative Director of Paintbox also offers this insider tip: "Put cuticle oil under the free edge, not just on the cuticle. It helps keep the natural nail underneath flexible and hydrated to prevent the gel from chipping off."

The folks at Gelish also recommend you wear gloves when cleaning with chemicals, and don't pick at any edges that start to peel up prematurely, as tempting as it might be.

Nail Care for Great Looking Nails

Nail Care: Keeping your nails looking young, healthy and shapely.

The shape of your nails can have an effect on your self-esteem, believe it or not. In fact, when you look at your nails you can tell whether or not they are healthy.

How to tell if your nails are healthy:
One way to know if your nails are healthy is whether or not they break easily or not.

Furthermore, the healthiest nails do not have any ridges, lines, or white spots on them (however harmless this slight blemish would be).

More importantly, healthy nails do not appear to have any type of yellow or green discoloration in any way. If your nails appear this way it could be a sign that something else is not right with your body, or a symptom of another condition such as chronic bronchitis or lymph edema (swelling of the hands).

The effect of a poor diet on the nails:
Unhealthy nails could also be a sign that the body is deficient in certain nutrients such as Vitamin E or Calcium. It is very important for you to watch your diet in order to ensure that you have the best-looking nails as possible.

Eating a variety of vegetables and/or dairy that contain calcium in them will help, along with eating certain types of fish. The body also needs plenty of fruits and vegetables daily.

    Proper nail care:
Besides dieting correctly, a person needs to use the proper nail care tools for shaping and caring for the nails. If you want healthier-looking nails you will want to invest in a few different products that will help you.

For example a buffer that has three or four different sides would be very helpful. The function of this particular tool is to file, buff, and shine your nails. When you are done using this nail tool your nails will typically look as though you have applied a clear coat of nail sealant to them.

While using a nail file and/or buffer you will usually use each side of the nail buffer on the top and the tips of your nails. While applying each step to the tip of your nails you will want to make sure to stroke the buffer across the tip of your nail in one direction always-not back and forth.

Furthermore, while applying each step of the nail buffer to the top of your nail it is best to work from the inside of your nail to the outside. You may want to read other newsletters like this which may provide you additional nail car tips in the future. You can also research on your own how to properly take care of your nails.

You can also acquire complete manicure sets for either the fingernails or the toenails that include a variety of tools. For instance, the foot manicure set (pedicure) usually will include items such as a micro file which is used for removing rough food callous.

These nail manicure sets also will often come equipped with a tool which helps you properly clean underneath your nails as well. For instance, some sets will include a nail scrubber or a pick device used for digging out dirt.

a woman biting her nailsDon't bite your nails:
You are advised that if you want healthy nails not to bite them. You also should not bit your cuticles because this could cause infection. You can do research to find out healthy ways to treat your nail cuticles. There are hand held tools and creams that can help your properly remove them.

Nail care cleansing and forming products:
In addition to some of the simple procedures for filing the nails above, you also may make use of a variety of different nail cleansers, conditioners, or moisturizers which will help you keep your nails soft and fresh-looking. You may also want to find products to help you keep your nail cuticles under control as well to promote proper growth.

The more you read about nail care the more you will be educated. You will be further informed regarding other useful nail products as you visit our site or read future newsletters. You are welcome to search for the information you need at your own convenience.

Healthy Living: 8 Ways to Stop Sugar Cravings

    The Secret to Controlling Cravings

Sugar cravings can get to even the most disciplined healthy eaters among us. One innocent little bite of a birthday cupcake and suddenly you’re face down in an empty bag of Oreos. Hey, it happens.

While sugar cravings may seem uncontrollable, there actually is a science to them and clear-cut ways you can get them in check. So, to prevent ruining all that good work you’ve done at the gym or opting for that salad, follow these eight expert tips to squash those beastly sugar cravings.

    De-Stress
You can thank stress for a huge chunk of those sugar cravings. These cravings begin in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis of your brain, which fires up when you’re stressed or coping with a busy lifestyle. “This HPA axis on overdrive makes your body actually crave more sugar because it thinks it’s constantly in ‘acute danger’ and needs more sugar to help you react quicker and survive,” explains Dr. Dani Gordon, an integrative medicine specialist and family physician.

So to get to the root cause of many sugar cravings, you’ve got to de-stress. Dr. Dani recommends taking up yoga, get a massage, mediate or do breathing exercises to calm the HPA axis before it sends you into a sugar fit. (Indeed, whether your stressed or not, trying some calming breathing exercises can help you control a sugar craving.)

    Get Your Eight Hours
When you’re not getting enough quality sleep, the hormone serotonin—the one that affects mood and appetite—dips below what the body needs to keep you happy and motivated. “The body knows that simple sugars will increase serotonin levels and hence the food cravings,” explains triathlon, fitness and nutrition coach Dr. Rick Kattouf.

    Try a Sugar Detox

While “everything in moderation” is the crux of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, sometimes even moderate amounts of sugar can send a girl careening down a slippery slope of sugar, sugar and more sugar.

So to better control your desire for sugary foods, it can be helpful to simply avoid all processed, sugary foods and eat clean for a couple of weeks (clean out your kitchen so that you don’t get tempted!). Or, if you want to be more hardcore about it, you could try a detox or juice cleanse.

As your body becomes used to not eating these sugary, processed foods, it will gradually stop craving them. Think of it as sugar rehab.

    Treat Yourself to Fruit

Once you start avoiding processed food and sugary snacks, you’ll be surprised at how easily a sugar craving can be tackled with a few sweet strawberries, a banana or a cup of watermelon. Remember, fruits have natural sugars, but we sometimes aren’t attuned to their sweetness because our taste buds are so intoxicated by ridiculously sugary, processed foods.

So if you’re having a sugar craving after a meal, try satisfying it with a sweet piece of fruit. Fruit is jam-packed with vital nutrients, unlike Oreos.   Don’t overdo it with the fruit, though. Because it’s high in sugar (fructose), certified holistic and clinical nutritionist Pamela Warren and registered dietitian Anita Mirchandani both recommend eating no more than 3 servings of fruit a day.

    Meal Timing

Sleep isn’t the only thing that affects those serotonin levels. Properly timing when your body gets nutrients is key to curbing serotonin-responsible sugar cravings as well.   Dr. Kattouf recommends fueling the body as soon as you wake—just have something small if you don’t have much of an appetite first thing in the morning. After breakfast, Dr. Kattouf recommends eating every 2.5 to 3.5 hours to keep your blood sugars (and serotonin levels) stabilized. Another good rule of thumb is to shoot for three meals a day plus two snacks, or five small meals a day.

    Balance Macronutrients
It’s not just how often you eat, but also what you eat that can help combat cravings.

To properly balance your blood sugar and seratonin levels, it’s important to eat a combination of carbs, protein and fat with each meal. (The worst thing you can do is to start your day with a sugary or starchy meal for breakfast.)   Although amounts vary depending on your fitness goals, weight, and health needs, Dr. Kattouf says a simple rule of thumb for caloric breakdown is 40 to 55 percent carbohydrates, 15 to 30 percent protein and 15 to 30 percent fat. Keeping a food diary can help you to track your levels throughout the day, as can planning your meals ahead of time.   Be sure to opt for healthy sources of carbohydrates (like whole grains), fats (like olive oil and avocados) and protein (like lean meats, Greek yogurt).

And of course, drink plenty of water with and between meals. Sometimes being thirsty can trigger what we perceive to be a food craving.

    Exercise

Your body can crave sugar to combat an energy slump, so stay energized. Getting enough sleep, combating stress, eating frequently and balancing nutrients are all important components of that, but so too is exercise.

    Recognize Boredom & Emotional Issues
Many of us start thinking about, and craving, sweets when we get bored or are feeling down. Make a concerted effort to recognize if you fall into either or both of these patterns.

If you’re eating as a response to boredom, make a concerted effort to find other ways to stimulate yourself. Cravings generally last for 10 to 20 minutes max, so go engage yourself with something else and let the craving pass.

Some ideas for you: get a manicure, go for a walk or run, call a friend/family member, organize your drawers, etc. If you get antsy while watching TV, grab a couple of hand weights and do a few bicep curls while you watch.

Just like boredom can trigger a sugar flare up, so too can emotional problems. While that cupcake may help you feel warmer and fuzzier, the pick up from it is only temporary. If you’re going through a tough time, acknowledge that food is not a solution, and consciously make an effort to find support through friends, family, or therapy if you need.

    Manicure With A Sharpie

    WATER-BASED METALLIC SHARPIE

    photos/post Kristin Ess

We stumbled on an cool nail art tool– a water-based, super-fine metallic sharpie in GOLD! Sometimes it’s hard to get those teeeeeny tiny lines like a legit nail artist can, but we test drove this pen and we’re officially in nail art heaven. We’re currently obsessed with fine-line pattern nail art and can’t get enough of these pens for that reason. The trick to using sharpies for nail art is letting them dry all the way and then putting a clear coat on in 1 or 2 quick swipes. We’ve never had any issues with smudging because of the speed at which we apply the top coat. I usually take an ample amount on the brush and swipe fast and I use this one.

    The Latest in Textured Nails

Nail Designs You CAN Rock In The Office – Say Hello To Textured Talons...

From feathered tips to furry fancies, textured nails are one of the hot trends of 2013 – both on and off the runway. We’ve asked Helena Biggs, deputy editor at Scratch magazine, to show us 6 ways to wear the craze…
    Feathered nails

Feathered fingertips: Get attention flocking to your fingers with a fun, feathered mani. Ciaté offers everything you need to create the look in one handy kit for £20 – just apply nail colour, then a top coat. While still wet, lay a feather on the nail and trim to your chosen length for nails that are soft to the touch. Image courtesy of www.ciate.co.uk.

    The velvet touch:
Don’t let furry fingers freak you out! Velvet nails can be super stylish and really make a statement. Experiment with an assortment of colours across all 10 nails, or if you’re not quite feeling brave enough, create velvet feature nails or a fun take on the French mani with velvety nail tips. Find your velvet shade of choice from the likes of Ciaté, Original Sugar, or even your local craft shop. Image courtesy ofwww.kimtreacy.com.

Bullionaire beauties: If you’re looking for a quick-fix nail look for one night only, then the ‘hundreds and thousands’ look is the way forward. Just apply your chosen nail shade and while your top coat is still wet, sprinkle little beads over the nail. Voilà! Shake off the excess and your 3D buillionaire nails are good to go. Image courtesy of www.originalsugar.com.
What a stud: Let your inner rock chick loose by adding studded decals onto nails. Whether you’re a golden girl or silver is your stud colour of choice, just ask your nail technician to embed them in a gel overlay for you or secure over polish with nail glue. Bio Sculpture offers all sorts of studs – use them on each nail or as an accent on your ring finger. Image courtesy of www.biosculpture.co.uk.
Leather look: Complement those new leather trousers or that hot new jacket you’ve just snapped up with some fierce leather-look nails. Nails Inc offers leather-effect polishes in six different shades. Simply apply, allow to dry, and add a skull decal or a few diamantés for that extra bit of edge. Image courtesy of www.nailsinc.com.

Gravel and glitter: Chunky glitters offer a mild 3D-effect on nails and will certainly catch the eyes of your friends come party season. Orly’s Flash Glam FX collection features an assortment of gorgeous sparkly shades that can be layered over your chosen polish colour or used on accent nails. Apply several coats for increased glamour. Sorted. Image courtesy of www.orlybeauty.co.uk.
